There was an article a few months back about some program that takes photographs and is able to determine depth and then render the photo into 3D. Does anyone happen to know what it was called?

So I've tried and stumbled many times on doing something extremely novice probably. I have access to a 3D printer, and have found the model I'd love to make. The problem is the model needs to be scaled, rotated and posed. Every single program I put the model in, doesn't allow for me to bend the figure. Anybody have any ideas that can help me? I'd like to be able to print, and paint the model by November for a gift. I'm not worried about her standing, I'll make/get a stand if I need to. So I'm using blender. I make my models with a mirror modifyer in effect. When I'm done, i create the skeltal for the character. Then I do everything you need to make it rigged (weight paint, etc). While I'm weight painting, let's say for the arms and legs, why does the paint appear still on BOTH sides? When I move one arm after rigging, the other becones distorted and moves in the same pattern as the correct arm. What am I doing wrong?

Why my trees actin up like this wtf i didnt tell them to do this damn trees. In maya lads. All of my tree textures have a transparency connected cause they are png but it seems to me they dont understand which tree should be showing in front of the other one. Is there a simple fix for this? Trying to put this up on my youtube but this issue has been delaying the project.
