Guys, im having terrible problem with unwrapping uv's for lightmaps. Im doing everything as tutorials and other resources says, with no results. The only thing that helps is making their resolution higher. Anybody got same problem? Or got some examples of working lightmaps. Thanks for help.

Hi guise. Currently working on some alien thing. Was supposed to be primate-like hunter creature. Ran out of ideas and got especially no clue what kind of feet to give him. Any ideas? Questions that Don't Deserve Their Own Thread Thread I'm learning how to paint textures and detail maps for my models in Substance Painter. But I'm wondering how exactly the pipeline will work for getting it to render appropriately once I import it back into Maya to render with Mental Ray. In Substance Painter, it uses a PBR shader that defaults to having diffuse, height, roughness, and metallic maps. Will Mental Ray render all of these map types appropriately without any special tweaking? Or will there be an intermediary step between baking out the maps in Substance Painter and getting them to render correctly in Mental Ray?

I have a question for Blender users on /3/: Which is better for doing specularity in Blender Cycles? A. Mixing the glossy shader with the diffuse shader with mix factor controlling the specular intensity? or B. Adding the glossy shader with the diffuse shader with the glossy shader's color brightness/value controlling the specular intensity? God damn I am so tired of being shitty at topology. I guess my IQ is just too fucking low to learn this shit or something. Sitting there and trying to figure out how to make good squares out of triangles and then realizing an hour(or hours) has passed makes me want to jump off a bridge. Is there any kind of resource for practicing topology? Did it just come to you over time? I don't consider myself "new" to 3d or the concept of topology but I'm so damn stupid that I just don't seem to be getting how to make nice topo. I always run into that one triangle that I just can't get rid of without some ridiculous solution. Is there some resource for practicing topo? Like a "game" or something that gives you topo problems to practice?

Will there be a trend away from normal maps back to real geometry in the future? Even in games I have noticed a large increase in the use of normal maps in places where in the past they would would have used actual geometry. With the influx of tools that can create normal maps and then generate textures around them it's easy to understand the appeal as it cuts down on the amount of more mundane geometry that has to be modeled. However there is an obvious trade off, highpoly models don't take up much room while having 4k x 4k maps on every inane object quickly spirals out of control. Even at 4k texture res you're lucky if an object can fill a 1080p image without the normal map becoming pixelated. What's even worse is most of these new programs prevent you using many UV tricks to maximise texture density, you can't overlap parts to reuse texture peices or mirror the textures on symmetrical objects without removing them from your workflow. What will happen in the future? Will you see a rise in programs dedicated to creating proceedural geometry from 2d patterns or will they just work on methods for editing and dynamically scaling massive bitmap images?
