Can we get a useful Maya scripts thread going? Just switching back to Maya after a few years, and realize why there is such a big scripting community behind it. It's a rotting pile of vile waste that needs user generated scripts to remain viable. Hey /3/ I hope you can help out a noob with a problem (again). I followed a tutorial for unwrapping and texturing and encountered some weirdness. When i unwrap the head of my model without the rest, it works fine. But when i try to unwrap the whole body, including the head, it stretches the head and ears like shown in the Picture. What causes this problem and how can i fix it?

Now how do they do this? Any attempt I have ever made at transparency, would not produce a result like this. It looks exactly like you'd expect in reality if you oiled her shirt up. This is something I've never seen done properly in 3dcg before.

Who else was doing only hard high poly meshes adding too much edgeloops when beginning 3D before realising that you had to start with low poly form to visualize the shape before going on high poly and all sculpt stuff? is this just not the sign of a noob? I don't get why they don't teach you this on tutorials or books, but instead show you how to model a character by slowly doing high poly mesh that are hard to shape?

I'm a total noob when it comes to lighting in max. I need a way to make soft shadows without using a skylight and that renders in scanline quickly. I did 3 point lighting with spotlight and ray-traced shadows and the render is 3 seconds. I want it at least under 10 if possible.

hello guys, i have a hard time learning lighting. i'm a super beginner and while i find tons of info about modeling and texturing, when it comes to lighting i only find bad tutorials that tell me where to put lights and what numbers i should put in vray settings. i haven't a clue about why i should use a photometric light instead of a vray light or a standard omni, and what parameters i really should change in studio renderings or exterior scenes. Where i should start? i have "vray-the complete guide", a 1000 pages book about every vray parameter, but it doesn't really explain what of those parameters are essential and what i should do in various situations. i need something a lot more basic. thank you.
