I'm using ZBrush 4R7 64-bit I've got 32GB of RAM, and Compact Mem is set to 4096. But ZBrush seems to be using none of it. For what purpose? Ignore the fact that it says "11GB free". It's actually 23GB free.

itt we list our skillsets and software we use. >Almost 5 years experience in 3D animation and modeling. >A few years in Photoshop. >1 year in Illustrator. I use Cinema4D (started with r11.5, using r16 now) for all my 3D work. I did try 3DS max in the begining, but I could never get on with it. Once I found C4D I've never looked back.

I'm making the transition from Blender to Maya. I started modeling as a hobby last December making at least an item a day on Blender. Does anyone have some advice that can help this transition smoother? It took me a long, long time to get well acquainted with Blender's interfaces and shortcuts. About 5 months into learning, I discovered Shift + Space to hide the right side menus, T to hide to hide the toolbar, etc. I know Maya's XYZ axes a changed in comparison to Blender's. I just don't want to make the same, inefficient mistakes of learning a program. Any advice?

How the hell does one "correctly" render Maya hair with Mental ray? I've tried pissing around in the hair settings, the render settings and the lighting settings (all from efforts to solve this dilemma via Google) but I still get this shitty non-antialiased appearance at the thin ends of the strands. It's especially obvious in clumps where a lot of thin strands cross over each other. Is there a specific way to get a more smooth result or is this just the nature of the beast?

I made my first hat in Blender. I admit I had no idea what I was doing with the shaders, which is probably why the white faux-fur belt looks like reptile leather or something. (I was trying t get rid of the orange reflection) Is this OK for a beginner?

Technical question. Do any of you know how studios handle the skinning of for example Doa5 models? I mean every few weeks it seems they come out with new outfits, which in reality means a whole new skinned model for each character. Since it is a fighting game the range of body movements is pretty large so skinning will be challenging. So how the hell do they do it, you don't tell me the manually re-skin the whole thing again and again for all these outfits on each and every character.

alright so I've been trying to figure this out for about half an hour and after skimming documentation I can't find the answer when I try to render pic related in mental ray, everything's a shade of dark gray, but in maya hardware 2.0 the colors show up properly (but it's maya hardware so it looks like garbage) basically, how do I fix the mental ray problem OR how do I make a hardware render look better?

Hi /3 I have a question which is more about physics than 3D but I haven't find any answers on the internet, so I hope someone here will help me. I found out the other day this post about IOR on a glass of water and my problem come from the part where glass and water are in contact. >>248239 In that case, we divide Glass IOR by Water IOR and the result is 1.14 I thought this was done this way because the light has to cross the glass first and the water then. But today I was watching some tutorials and found out that some guys do the opposite, they divide Liquid IOR by Glass IOR so the result is 0.875 Now I'm thinking of it, depending on where you put your light, it may cross water first and glass after, so maybe it do not depend of this So my question is what's the way to find the good IOR when two surfaces are in contact ? Which divide which and why ? By the way, my pic is two very simple and fast render test I did with two differents IOR for glass/water part and the 0.87 looks very strange to me. There is no lights in the scene, just checker as environnement for the reflections. ( + Sorry for my english)
