Max workflow for lowpoly base textures?

I'm working in Max trying to figure out the best way to render out a base diffuse map that I can color and edit in photoshop and put on my 3d model. I'm using render to texture to create a light map and using a skylight to illuminate the model when it's rendering. Long story short, I feel like there's probably a better way to do this and want the best base I can get. What workflow do you guys use for this? Pic related, it's the map I rendered.

I'm trying to create a particle manipulator window with python.. I am having a lot of trouble connecting the emitted particles with pp attributes, or however you do it. I'm in a time of my life where I need to go to pick what I want to do as a profession. I have been doing 3d for a year now and I absolutely love it and I would like to work in an animation studio on day. But on the other hand I'm having a tough time finding a school for it and i'm afraid that there is not enugh jobs for it. My second option is to be a programmer which is harder and I don't like it but one day when I go to another country maybe it will be more easy to find a good paying job. Please somebody, tell me about the pay in 3d, how is it in other countries, are there enough job and is it a full time job or just something to do on the side as I have been told???

Hi I'm working on a low poly characters for a game project with my friends and I'm wondering if anyone has any tips of making hair for games? Currently, I am manually extruding and modeling the hair but it feels very blocky and tedious to make. I notice a lot of games use curves and make planes to do hair but the problem with the Unity shader is that its not double sided (so one side is invisible). :(

Alright, I'll have to ask help for this This is the most detailed model so far. How do I go around texturing this beast? It has lots of objects and parts so I don't know what is the best way to go around making seams and maps. I have photoshop available and know how to export the model as Collada file and open in photoshop 3d mode, however I have no experience about making textures this way.

So I am fairly new to the sketch up program, and after a few tutorials it seems easy enough to pick up and use for the basics. I am obviously far from creating works of art. or a decent model at all. Does anyone else use this software? do you have any good reference material to help gain a better grasp of the tools and way things work, im really trying to use this for 3d modeling, so I may in the future be able to do 3d printing. is this a feasible goal?
