Remaking old game textures

Any talented texture artists here that are familiar with remaking texture from old games? So far i have been making them by testing various interpolation algorithms and then create complicated batch actions for overlaying other edited and adjusted textures (either photos of proceduraly generated) and improve their quality (mostly because i've been dealing with very complicated sets of 100-150 textures).
However, i'd like to know more about improving individual textures (not by overlaying other textures) on a more professional level. I've seen many redone textures, but there are no tutorials, guides or somekind of in-depth forums discussion on that topic. Obviously for such quality textures you need to take your own proper photos/textures because .jpg textures from internet are mostly bad quality and small, and retouch them with photoshop, but what kind of interpolating algorithms do you use for upscaling original - i think they have to be linear so texture would tile and be more accurate; how do you do it and what tools do you use, i'd also appriciate any tips or procedures.
