Long story short, I'm going to be setting up a system separate to my main gaming PC for the sole purpose of doing art and 3D/dev work. Was just wondering if anyone here has done the same thing, has any build recommendations etc. Really just looking for something that will let me do 3D work and photoshop painting at fairly high resolutions comfortably, without any performance hitches, for as long as possible. I'm still not sure whether to opt for a workstation card or just a regular, mid-range gaming graphics card to get the job done.

I feel I must alert you folks to the beauty that is working on CAD and other 3D (in fact any editing software), with an MMO-type mouse like this one. There are quite a few out there but I've only tried this one and it's fucking great. I'm using it with Revit and have all 12 side buttons assigned to various commands. You can make different configurations for each program and then within each program you can make different configurations for that particular program. So basically even if you run out of buttons you can do that or if you don't want to have to go to open Synapse to cycle configurations, you can just assign new shortcuts in your program (e.g "ctrl+ <the shortcut you've applied to button 1>") so effectively you have unlimited combinations and basically your memory is the only thing that limits how many shortcuts you can use. It took me 3-4 days to memorise what I assigned to each button but now it's become second nature, to the point where I get annoyed when I have to use a normal mouse. tl;dr MMO mice for 3D software fucking rule

Hi, I'm middle of a bottleneck situation here. I have a crappy GPU, gtx 580, but a very good CPU, intel 990x 5 cores 12 threads OC at 5.0 GHz. While I'm pleased with the rendering times in v-ray, when I try to simulate MassFX collisions and forces in Max, it is veeeery slow, like 1 minute per frame. Baking the simulation is also slow. Is there any way to turn the processing of MassFX to CPU usage, or do I have to upgrade my graphics card? I have the money for the gtx 1080 but I don't know if I should spend it.

What do you use to skin/weight your models? I'm having a problem in both Max and Maya with smoothing the weights. How do you smooth a weight properly between 4 or more bones? In Max I use the 'Smooth Weights' paint tool, but it does not smooth evenly between all the influences, it seems to have a preference to giving the most influence to the currently selected bone so you have to ping-pong between multiple bones smoothing each time you select a new bone. Also, Max loves to suddenly balloon out the weights, going beyond 100% and breaking it completely. Wat. Maya on the other hand doesn't go beyond 100% influence which is nice, but it still seems to favor the current selected bones and not giving a desirable result. I'm considering using XSI as my main program to skin with because it seems to be the only one where the 'smooth' feature actually smooths evenly between ALL bones that the vert is being influenced by. Does anyone else seem to have this problem or is it just me?

Whats your opinion about scripts that let your automatically rig a character? Im watching this video demostration and Im seriously amazed. The tutorial for this tool is 12 videos long and implementing it looks more a hassle than anything else, but the facial rig is super powerful.

I need a short, maybe 7 second, intro for my youtube videos and have been quoted $1000 USD and up. I only have $100 USD max to spend, I dont need one built from the ground up, I dont care if its from a premade template. I just need to add my channel name and some music and done. I made a rough go of it using Blender templates from Youtube but my shitty computer wouldn't render it. Is this even possible at this price or should I give up now?

Hello /3/. I'm looking for help with 3d models and animations . I'm new with 3D modeling , and I still dont know many things about it. The biggest question that keep bugging me , is it worth it to Rig models , or it's better to animate with your model bones . I'm asking this , because I'm working alone with games graphics , like the model in the file , and I try to save as much time as possible on my projects. Also , I wanted to know what is the best number of poligons for a hero of the game and simpe units, also , how much poligons are too much for a single map (I'm creating maps in my modeling program). Who here happy this is the current state of character art in games. I used to agonize over making the most perfect Barbara Palvin lookalikes. I just get a basemesh now and some tumblrista gives me instructions on how to make it more gender fluid until we get something like melted Patton Oswalt. Set alpha 23 to spray crank up the specular on the texture and I'm done. Go home take my joy and it's off to work again for another wacky adventure. Praise Anita.

What's the best uv's for 3d painting? I have been trying to 3d paint a post box but it is a bit of a struggle cause mudbox just crashes with-in 5 - 10 minutes of using it but, I was wondering how the uv's should be. For example I wouldn't assume it would matter on their layout cause i'll just be painting onto the uv's. So if I out my model into blender and do a smart uv projection it just lays out the uv map everywhere. I know this is isn't amazing for texturing but does it matter for 3d painting? Pic related, this is the uv i am using at the moment because I chose to texture in the node editor using blend nodes and such so it is relatively neat. but could the uv's just be anywhere as long as they are visible for 3d painting?

Has anyone here taken this exam? Is it difficult? I know there are three tiers, user being the easiest and professional being the hardest. If you have taken it, what's a good way to study for it?
