hey guys i'm pretty new to 3d and i'm trying to wrap my head around normal maps. i've looked through the sticky but I can't seem to find any good tutorials on this, some are dead links or outdated and etc. does anyone have links or names of good resources for learning normal mapping ? also if anyone could help me understand better how it works, that would be great.. from what I know you use a low poly model as your base, and then sculpt details into a high poly model.. and bake the details into a map somehow ? is the normal map just an image file like .png or is it some type of special file ? also, does it use coordinates like a UV map ? also I guess I should ask... is normal mapping generally considered part of texturing?

So hey any of you folks do abstract? Render is 1920x1080 made in Blender under 4 hours, cycles engine. Watermark and background are actually added post-render and after compositing, but aside from that all assets were made from scratch. Also I feel like receiving some lovely abuse/criticism of my garbage, so bash away on my shit if you feel like it! I've only been doing 3D for 4 months anyhow (mostly self taught) so this will be sub-par.

3d photorealism is impressive but I feel like it lacks staying power....I mean, you need to have animation for a video or a long game story and ai for a game or else everyone will know you're bad at 3d and keeping an audience. I feel like graphics are in distant second place to story, timing, and ai in terms of selling copies of your product. Thoughts?

So I am a newfag to 3D modeling but I do know that most people that create team fortress 2 items make them redundant and don't fit the theme Team Fortress 2 has. Now I'm not a 3D modeler. I'm a amateur cartoonist but being a cartoonist helps you create ideas that fit certain themes. I've tried my luck at 3D modeling but it doesn't fit me. I thought it over and came to the conclusion that I need a partner. A partner that can take over the 3D modeling and texturing part. I can deal with the anything that doesn't have to do with modeling. I'm not looking for a boss. I'm looking for a partner. Hey 4chans. I got a question, how do you make a toy glass ball with this colourful filling, look like a real-life one, like those on the pic? as far as i got, they refract all light, except the things inside of them - and real ones do that too. Anyone got any ideas?
