so /3/ I'm currently working on a render of earth with the sun in the background, and now I've got a question. As you can see in the picture the back side is dark, but I want to add a different texture with lights where ever the directional light does not hit. I tried surf.lumminance with a reverse node on the color gain of my file on duplicated sphere, but no dice. Anyone got any idea?

Just a quick question fellas. Take the little building I've modelled, to make things easier when unwrapping the east and west walls, is it practicaI to "paste" or snap the UV on to each other? Obviously both walls would look completely identical, but I'm only trying to save UV space here. Any help is appreciated, trying to catch up on my unwrapping workflow.

3dsMax Cut tool issue

I'm fairly new to 3d modelling, and I'm having an issue. I'm not sure if this is a setting i have misplaced or an issue with 3dsmax 2012 itself, but the cut tool refuses to cut into the polygon. I want to make new vertices to more easily shape the object in question, and then cut them in to quads. however the cut tool is only letting me select the outer edge of the object - the only exception to this rule is if I create some vertices on the inside and then cut to them, but I can still not cut to the edges on the inside of the polygon, only the vertices I make. It's gotten quite frustrating, google doesnt seem to know what the problem is, so I'm hoping someone here will. this object in question is an editable poly, supposedly anyway.

On the left is a render i made a few months back; on the right is a current render using the same file. For the fucking life of me, I cannot figure out how to replicate the graininess on that one surface. I have not changed any properties of the actual material; it has to be something in the render settings. It is NOT a normal map. Can anyone help me figure out how to replicate that grain? Will post render settings below.

Okay /3/, Recently I've been making my own models in Blender for my game 'cause fuck artists they're not being helpful at all. Still, even though I'm getting pretty used to Blender by now, I feel like that something's amiss. Or more like, I'm afraid that I'm missing some key features available in other softs like 3ds or Maya that might make my workflow faster. Lemme get this straight, I don't fucking care about having a "professional" workflow or whatever, I just want to be able to make my own models for my game, nothing more, nothing less. So my question is : - Am I missing stuff that might make "modelling characters for gaming" easier by not using 3ds, maya or even Zbrush? I want to make sure that I'm using the right soft for this, since I'm going to model several characters and currently I'm not really convinced by Blender even though I actually like it. At this point, I don't mind learning new stuff again, I just want to have the proper bases to be fast and effective at making my models. Pic related, the kind of characters I'm aiming for.
