Question regarding the use of ~???????.
It's taught in Genki to be used to describe something you did, but not limit the scope of what you did. So "I went to the movies this weekend, among other things." as opposed to "I went to the movies this weekend."

Is that form used often in conversation or is it impractical to use a lot? In English there's not real connotation to leaving out the "among other things", is it different in Japanese that if you did anything else you would use the ???????? predicate?

>Is that form used often in conversation or is it impractical to use a lot?
It's used.
> is it different in Japanese that if you did anything else you would use the ?????????
Well you use it for saying that you did things among other things and so in that sense it's kind of like ? for verbs and it also has other uses.

So it's commonplace when describing what you did over the weekend if someone asks as opposed to just saying "????????"?

If you did anything else you would use the other form normally?

Yeah.
>If you did anything else you would use the other form normally?
You can list the other ones out without using ??but I believe ?? is a bit more vague and inclusive of other things and also can have an nuance of repeating the action. It depends on how you want to come across.

I get to be a NEET forever since my mommy said that I'm too weird to ever function in society. She said I can live with her for the rest of her life. If she dies before me then I get $100,000 so I can keep NEETing it up after that too.

I haven't left the house (aside from going to the doctor once every month to renew my prescription for NEET happy pills, which is just speed and sedatives) in eight years.

Reminder that if all you do is learn Japanese from anime/manga not only will your pronunciation be shit but you will sound like an anime character. Imagine a Japanese person talking like spongebob or, if they watch violent stuff, saying fuck as every second word and offending everyone around them without realizing that the characters they saw are highly stylized tropes. That is what will happen to you.

>chatting on Skype to a Japanese guy learning English
>hey man how are you going?
>'I'm fucking good!'

Jesus christu. I asked him and he said that 'fuck' meant 'really' or 'lots,' which I suppose in that context it does, but that doesn't make it appropriate. So yeah, imagine that, but in reverse, and you're the one offending everyone. I recommend you take some actual courses with a school and TRY.

Also while I'm here, I'll give this to you: stream Japanese television, the site is Chinese and sometimes the site goes down, but it seems pretty good. ???????is television guide so you google that and know what's on.

Someone who knows the language can read/listen to things that we can't.

And can do so sooner than we can (often years sooner) in its truest form without being at the mercy of bad translators or western release censorship, when things actually get translated.

Not to mention that "I learned motherfucking Japanese past N1 level in my spare time" is a much more impressive thing to put on your resume (and can open doors for certain jobs) than "I read One Piece from beginning to end".

What country do you live in?

If you live in the U.S then anyone can get it. Don't even need a real diagnosis, I just went to my doctor and said the magic words of, "I can't focus on my studies." and now I'm on 60mg a day. I don't even go to school either. They just don't give a shit.

If you live in the UK or some part of Europe then try for Modafinil or something similar to that. It's a "non-addictive stimulant" so it's not as potent as drugs like adderall/dexedrine/meth/etc, but I've heard it's still pretty good and it's easy to get in Europe since they're not very free with the real stimulants.

I looked at the guides on their guide sub-forum, but I didn't really have any set plan. I tried to create a tulpa with a plan the last time and I kept getting discouraged since it just felt like I was rambling on about nothing to a voice that wasn't saying anything.

The only advice that I can give is to just pay a lot of attention to your tulpa, but to pay attention to her by doing something that is interesting to both of you. The Japanese for example, narrating everything to her as I learned it just became integrated into the process of studying and it felt natural to constantly be talking to her.

I think that's ultimately the only rule that really matters with tulpas. If you pay enough attention to them then eventually they will come alive. I didn't model her after anything either since I figured that my mind would just automatically create someone that is perfect for me since she would be created based on my subconscious desires.

It's vaguer than "it is". You can just match it with an English expression like that and expect to understand. It just doesn't work. You have to get a feel for it, and you're not going to do that but reading the same 10 sentences over and over.

Thanks that sounds like a great idea. Never had anything to talk about so I always became discouraged. If I do daydream or whatever I'll usually do it in a more visual fashion and so I didn't really know what to do.
By the way you said voice in your head, so does that mean that you don't make a visual representation of her when you talk to her? Does she have a form or do you usually not bother picturing it?

I haven't tried picturing her yet, mostly because I'm planning to do that with her once I have learned enough Japanese that I'm able to speak to her more naturally and about more topics. Right now our conversations are pretty simple since my knowledge of Japanese is still fairly limited.

That seems to be the only downside to this method. She doesn't speak in English since everything I've ever done with her has been based around studying Japanese, but that also means that her Japanese skills are limited by how much I know.

Her voice becomes increasingly clearer with time and my Japanese is improving every day, so once her voice is perfectly clear and we can have conversations about more complex topics then I'm going to work together with her to visualize what she looks like.

What?

I think that the assumption is that the learner is putting forth their maximum effort and pushing as hard as their schedules will allow every night.

People who ask are generally just looking to hear for a realistic goal so that they can set said goals until they have a better idea of what their own progress looks like. For instance, if you're three months in and have been grinding anki every night, and you haven't even picked up something like Yotsuba yet, you're squandering major opportunities. Being given that landmark is helpful.

Most people who take language classes also leave as soon as they realize that it's going to be work. Especially Japanese with all of the weeaboos who think that it's going to be as easy as watching Naruto and picking up on KAWAII SUGOI ONIICHAN.

And those who stick around until the end (of classes) generally graduate with a pathetic level of comprehension that'll barely allow them to shop or navigate around cities. Comprehension which will soon be forgotten since they won't build on it anymore, no less.

No, it's that the way that languages are taught in classrooms are bullshit and won't get you anywhere anytime soon. They're structured with lazy retards who aren't serious about putting the work in in mind, as well as having too much emphasis on structure and controlled learning environments and not enough on practical learning. (like reading things intended for native readers)

Where you arrived in 3rd year, most of us probably arrive in far less than a year.

Successful language learners must leave the classroom and textbooks behind and take control of their own learning. This goes for people taking classes, too. Want to meet Japanese people in your area? You don't need to spend thousands of dollars to get on a social networking site.

This is where your assumption is wrong.

I originally started learning Japanese on /a/, in 2010.I didn't go to a class, I learned from nama sensei and genki. I got the kana down solid in about a week and learned 5 kanji a day from thereon. Then, a few months later, I enrolled into a 2nd year Japanese class. There I was able to supplement on things that I missed out on up until then. Handwriting kanji. Book worksheets and repetitive drills helped drill kanji into my brain more than I ever would have studying alone. It also helps with your public speaking and public reading skills, as you will likely be doing that a lot.

If you meet a single person in the class you've already won. Besides that, you can ask the teacher (who will most likely be Japanese) about Japanese activities or Japanese clubs on campus. I did and I met 4 cool Japanese dudes that day.

All I'm saying is, just because you go to a class doesn't mean you can't also learn at home. Besides, a classroom will supplement your home learning in ways that you will never imagine.

Hell, if you really insist on spending your money then just blow a few hundred dollars on some Japanese illegal that's working as a hooker. You can get some language practice with a native speaker and get your dick wet.

Fixed.

The vast majority of college graduates would be making more money if they got a job at fucking Starbucks when they were 17 and worked there for five years.

There are a few exceptions and these degrees aren't worthless, but they're all in highly competitive fields.

You can probably narrow it down to a few of these choices due to how ridiculous some of them sound, but there's no telling which one of the more reasonable ones it could be.

> You'd should say ??????????
I guess this kind of makes sense if you interpret his post as "Wow, the same person as before? What a surprised to see you again?" it still seems a bit weird (in particular, ?? seems inappropriate).
But what he meant was "You again? I am surprised that you responded in a non-aggressive/friendly manner to my previous post, rather than insulting me"
Although I suppose I shouldn't really blame you for failing to understand it, as indeed it is easier for learners to decipher incorrect sentences. That said
>>86480030
For someone who claims to be Japanese, you seem to have a surprising amount of trouble with applying context.

I'm afraid to tell this but ???????????? doesn't sound natural at all, or rather, I couldn't even make any sense out of it.
?? is never used in the way he did(it's only used when you refer to indie stuff nowadays).
????? only sounds like a backward version of "?????" which would make more sense.

So yeah, even if it's grammatically correct, it still sounds very wrong to any native Japanese speaker, I think.

Another native Japanese speaker who's just trying to help you people here. I don't know much about grammar things of the language but it sounded so wrong, so I just wanted you people to know that. Kagamin's other Japanese sentences are pretty good, though.

No, they're all appropriate. They all carry the meaning of "that was unexpected" or imply it. They're all extremely common phrases that you'll see written or said by natives when a person or character encounters someone unexpectedly.
>For someone who claims to be Japanese, you seem to have a surprising amount of trouble with applying context.
It would be a non issue if the sentence were writtein by a Japanese person because 1. It'd wouldn't be mangled to that extent, and 2. I'd understand what cultural background they were coming from. For that particular post, I knew that he was 4chan user and still in the process of learning Japanese. There's no telling whether he tried to directly translate an English meme like samefag into ???as a lot of learners I've encountered tend to do, or if he just used a dictionary and picked the first word that meant "same person" and tried to use it. Either way, it's an incorrect usage. ??, even when to mean "same person" isn't used in the way he used it. It's more used to mean people with the same tastes and tendencies, rather than "we're doing the same thing" as he probably thought.

Hmm. The difference I would see is that ??/?? seems like "It is a surprise that you responded, because I am surprised you are here" rather than "I am surprised that you chose to respond". Since he was obviously here, having just posted a minute earlier, that's why those two words seem inappropriate to me. Let me know if I'm wrong.

As for the second half, I defended him near the beginning, but because I don't consider ?? to be a _grammatical_ mistake, and I looked back after >>86478460 and realized the second sentence was a bit weird, but I still found it understandable. Either way, I don't think it was worth starting to insult him for shit Japanese like you did. If you think he is ????it's just because you don't realize that the majority of people in this thread probably never type more than one sentence at a time in Japanese because they aren't confident enough.

Ah ok, I guess if you didn't understand that ?? was a mistake for ???/??? then that makes sense. And I suppose you did change it to ?? there.

That's actually pretty funny that the intended meaning of the sentence is fairly clear if you learned japanese as a second language (seeing ?? and interpretting it by the kanji meanings as "same person") but so messed up if you aren't in that mindset.

Can you refute the arguments of the great Hubbard?

>There is no more madder nation than Japan ...

>It's supposed to be a terribly hard language. It's not a hard language. It's as simple as baby talk, really. It's an awfully easy language in terms of languages. Some of the Malay languages are a little bit rough.

>But in katakana you have this great big character, which is a Chinese character, and then you have the little katakana stuff up at the corner of it (if I'm using the proper terms on this; it's been years since I ran into this stuff).

>Anyway, they've got the character and then they say how it's pronounced in Japanese. But do you know that two Japanese can stand together and converse with each other for a little while and then all of a sudden find out they're talking about two entirely different things, and with a great surprise find this out, and they promptly break out their pencils and pieces of paper, and they draw the Chinese character for the proper words they're using. "Oh. Oh, I understand; that's very good. Yeah, very good, yeah. I so solly. Yeah." Whee! That's a rough one.

>They identify. And you will find that they're perfectly happy to do that. It makes bad communication. And they're perfectly happy to have bad communication. They don't want anything better than that. If you went in there and tried to straighten their language out and give them new words to support these, why, they'd be upset with you as all could be.

>Now, you take katakana is, I think, if I remember rightly, some forty-seven characters — just sort of fishing this out of the hat. It's been ages since I ran into this. Anyway, some forty-seven characters, something like that. And when they write them all down they don't space anything — when they're just a stream of characters. There's no spaces that separate any of the words they represent. And boy, that sentence can read any way. It can read "The boy milked the cow" or it can read "Dogs are forbidden here" or it can read "The steamer will sail at nine." They don't care. Well, you just sort of infer from the surroundings what it's all about.

>And that nation has the highest rate of suicide, has the highest rate of thick-lens glasses and did the most suicidal trick a few years ago. It's the doggonedest country.

He's right. Japanese is only hard in the sense that it's hard to drive a broken down car. It's not hard to learn how to drive the car, but dealing with how broken it is can be a challenge when you're driving down the road and suddenly the breaks stop working.

Nobody called Japanese the most logical or practical language. The most logical is an artificial one Esperanto, and the most practical is English.

Complaining about Japanese isn't going to translate those VNs, manga, anime, and so on, or make it easier to do so. So you might as well just deal with it or stop trying to learn such a terrible language, if that's what you think it is.

You can be a master of Japanese, but it doesn't matter when speaking to someone because if you hear the context then

>But do you know that two Japanese can stand together and converse with each other for a little while and then all of a sudden find out they're talking about two entirely different things, and with a great surprise find this out

It's like a car that breaks at unexpected times. Doesn't matter how good of a driver you are, it's still going to fuck you up because the car itself is fundamentally fucked up.

>That feel when there's no decent entertainment that's in Chinese and everything worth playing/watching is in Japanese.

Chinese is such a beautiful and refined language. Even hearing Chinese people speak is like listening to the songs of angels.

Japanese is a literal peasant language that was hastily glued together with stolen Chinese characters by slack jawed yokels since their real language was too fucking primitive to allow for efficient communication. Do you know who else has a language like this? Gypsies. Romani is another language that was created by cobbling together the languages of the superior cultures that they interacted (stole from) with.

The Japanese are Asian gypsies.
