Is Cowboy Bebop the masterpiece that it's hyped up to be? I've heard people say it's virtually untouchable as far as criticisms go. Is Spike as cool as people say, cooler than any other anime character there is?

HAHA, no. The complaints I've most often seen are about the pacing and about how most of the episodes are completely unrelated to the main plot.

Anybody wanting to watch Bebop for the first time to see a masterpiece in anime is going to be disappointed. The only reason people think it's the greatest thing ever is because of the nostalgia goggles strapped to their faces when they remember watching it when they were kids( baby's first animu) and because of the hipster critics

Hype will always ruin a series or movie. Cowboy Bebop is good, but don't watch it expecting the greatest thing ever or the answer to all of life's questions. If you keep this rule in mind when watching anything, you'll be a lot happier.

That said, Spike is a really cool character. All the characters are cool. The entire series was designed to be cool, from the characters to the setting to the back story to the music.

Spike is a burnt out faggot who ditches his friends because he can't get over his shitty past. All the people who idealize him as this epitome of cool gangster type missed the point. The show itself is poorly planned out and the plot related episodes have a jarring contrast next to the goofy self contained ones. It's a memorable show and definitely worth watching but I don't think it's worth the reverence.

Coming from someone who finds most anime to be utter garbage, I think this series is fantastic. I have never found any anime as mature or as intelligent as this one (including films, and I'm pretty sure I've seen all the good ones:Dbz, Naruto, Outlaw Star, Yuyu hakusho). That is not to say that it doesn't have elements which are designed to cater to a less mature crowd, like excessively cute sounding robots or the occasional unnecessary (and stylistically jarring) gratuitously sexual outfits and angles of the characters wearing said outfits. The stand alone episodes are also sometimes not up to par with the series, but I don't find that they take anything away from the really fantastic main storylines.

The animation is not as good as anime films, but overall I think this series is considerably better than both of the films, and head and shoulders above every other anime series out there.

See, I love the idea of a show that follows the individual adventures of a group of bounty hunters, and I'm not sure how you'd work the main plot into most of those episodes. You could make it so that the Syndicate was behind or involved a lot of the things they encounter, which would have made them seem more powerful. But that may have gotten kind of annoying after a while.

Although I found that the earlier episodes with, more of their historical focus, were miles better than the latter episodes .

The zombie, baseball, and graffiti episodes just don't fit the show and are really poorly animated and drawn. Seems that they tried to stretch a show that just didn't need it.

I watched it again a few weeks ago because BD.
It's definitely different and avoids most of the things that make modern anime shit, i.e. you can show it to somebody who doesn't know where Japan is and they'll be able to actually understand what's happening.
It was, nevertheless, not above "decently entertaining." The characters are well defined, yes, but they are not particularly interesting. Spike is a child, for fuck's sake.
At any rate, I have to acknowledge it managed to make me criticize it as an actual decent thing, as opposed to as a shitty Chinese cartoon with lots of catchphrases and multicolored crazy hairstyles.

It is basic. The workmanship and quality of the show is amazing, but the plot is essentially a mashup of noir and spaghetti western elements from better movies and shows.

I personally think something like Tatami Galaxy that really plays with it's narrative structure for the sake of character development is a much more engaging watch. Even something like Tehxnolyze and Dennou Coil that does such a better job developing it's world is more interesting than Cowboy Bebop.

But you're going to retort by saying my opinions and tastes are shit, right?

>The episodic nature of it is kind of a turn-off for some people, but the plot-related episodes still hold up fine. The soundtrack's pretty neat too.
It's exact opposite for me. The plot related episodes can go straight into the trashcan if you ask me. Along with Spike and his shitty past and his brain problems.

I didn't mean to make it sound like I didn't enjoy the one-shot episodes, I enjoyed most of the episodes the show had. I'm just saying what I've noticed from a few people's opinions.
