Hey /adv/

Does anyone have any experience with landlords?
I recently moved in with a friend (cuz I'm broke), and the landlord from the previous apartment is making me sign a contract for all the rent I owe him.
I told him that I need to speak with OCMW (which is kind of like a law firm for welfare babies in this country) before I sign anything, because I'm literally broke.
He got upset and we argued back and forth and he threatened with legal action etc.

I also promised the apartment to this lady who has a steady income, so the landlord would finally get some money, because there's practically no one living in the building. But he refused the lady until I signed the contract.

I guess I'm asking for advice on how do I mentally process this whole situation. I'm only 24 and owe this man a lot of money and I fear this is not going to end well and I really don't want to go to court at this age for something this stupid.

tl;dr: I owe money to landlord, I promise I'll pay. He said that I can only pay if I sign the specific contract he put up. I refuse. He mad.

You do realise you owe him rent for however long your lease is, right? It doesn't matter if you sign the contract or not, you owe him that money regardless.

Whatever he is making you sign seems a bit sketchy, get that checked out today, don't leave shit like this because you feel like sitting around and being lazy for the next few days.

We have no clue what it is he is trying to get you to sign, get it checked out to make sure you are not fucking up, and start paying him, the problem is the court case wont be some stupid little thing. You literally took this guys place and have not paid him a penny for it, he could have rented that out to other people, it causes a chain reaction because now he could get into shit with people he owe's money to. If you don't pay soon you'l have to go to this "stupid court" where they will help fix this shit, and dump you in a ton more debt than what you are already in.

Yeah and I'm willing to pay that money, just not through the means he wants me to. Because I'm in a welfare program and not allowed to just sign payment plans willy nilly. And he didn't seem to understand that.

He refused to let me take the contract with me. Literally took it out of my hands and put it away. And yeah the court would cost me a lot of money, that's why I'm trying to avoid it by letting it go through welfare, but the man is being difficult about that.

You owe him money, you are his bitch, if you don't want to pay through the means he wants you to then expect the police to get involved. Go ahead and get whatever he wanted you to sign checked out sure find out your legal obligations of what you can and can't do at this point. We don't know what it is but it sounds as if he was trying to tie you down in a way you will be forced to pay him and he won't have to worry about you just running off all of a sudden. I know it sounds perfect in your head that you'l just tell him not to worry you'l pay him later, and you may not completely understand why he is so buttmad about this. But people get fucked over and conned every day, he is not taking any risks, the longer you keep pressing his buttons the more anxious he will get at the thought of you just running off, leave it to long and the police will be involved.

That sounds like a big red flag, you should ask for a photocopy of it at least, it means he was trying to trick you into something. You are from America right? Here in Europe we usually have free legal firms that help out with this shit for younger people in shitty situations like you.

I'm European and I'm going to look into the free legal aid. The only problem is my current residency because I'm living with a friend.
So I hope that won't become a problem.

Wow, that's great, i am from UK and my older brother had money problems recently he got into a ton of debt, and was able to prove he is a complete idiot, the government paid his debts, only now he is in a strict spending program and they monitor most of his transactions, but it did get him out of a really bad mess, only i doubt any other country in Europe would do that.
If you are from UK you can get lots of free legal help, and help with the money you owe your landlord.
