Someone owes me $600+ in unpaid rent, and he signed a contract stating he'd pay me back at the end of April. Well it's going on June and I haven't seen any of the money and he keeps saying he's going to bring some over. Well he hasn't, and a package addressed to him arrived in our mail today and he wants it. Can I legally hold it (not open it) until I get paid back in full?

Yeah and you can even sue him.

Don't play these bitchy legal games, you asshole.
Tell him to pay up one more time or you're kicking him out. Then get the money or kick him out. This weird little shit you're doing is gay as fuck.

Bumping. I have a signed document by him stating he'd pay me the full $600 by the end of april 2013. Can I hold this package addressed to him until I'm paid back?

i think you could just take him to small claims court or something, man

do you have a friend who's a lawyer? because you might not need a representative but it would be handy to figure out what you need to successfully get your money

Yeah, but that takes time. I plan on doing that, yes, but I don't want this fucker to get his package until I have my money. But if it's illegal for me to hold onto it I'll give it to him.

OR, you can not-so-legally put a bullet in his kneecap.
Your choice OP.

Legalfag here.

Holding or opening mail addressed to someone else is a federal offense. His package and the money you are owed have nothing to do with one another. Return the package to the sender because he no longer lives at that address. Take him to small claims court to get back the money he owes you.

No you can not legally hold any mail of his.

Holding and or opening post addressed to someone else is illegal in every state, and even Canada.

You can however send that shit straight back to wherever it came from. In which case they'll charge him again for shipping.

To tell the truth, you are currently legally obligated to send it back. To give it to him would be to deliver it to someone not residing in the posted address, which is also illegal.

Okay thanks guys. My friends tried to tell me I could. I think I'll try sending it back (how do I send it back? Just give it to the mailman?).

You can leave it in your mailbox. All you have to do is take a sharpie and write "RETURN TO SENDER" on it.

Did you sign for it? If it was left outside your door step and he asks about it, deny all knowledge.

Then somewhere down the line sell the parts.
