How long does it take for an animal to decompose? There's squirrels where I live so that's a new experience for me, so for the last year I've watched them scurry around the trees outside my house. Today I woke up to see a neighborhood cat had killed one and was eating it.

I don't want to say I'm a "collector", because that makes me sound like a psychopath, but over the years I've acquired a few animal skulls. My mom gave me a cat one, and a preserved shark head. I found a cow skull on the beach that I got professionally cleaned. Anyway, the cat had detached the squirrel's head, so I buried it as deep as I could, not that deep because I hit cement, but I put some rocks on top to keep bigger animals out. I'll monitor it for the next few weeks, but how long will it take for the head to revert itself to just bone through decomposition? My lease is up in June, will that be enough time? It gets pretty wet here so I'm hoping that will help speed things along.

Also I should ask, is there a deterrent I could spray on the rocks to ward scavengers away? I was thinking maybe vinegar, and I have some pepper flakes. Would those be good, or is there something better?

Something spicy, most animals don't like that

Give it about 3-4 months and then retrieve it. It'll probably have some gloop on it and smell. to deal with this boil the skull for about 5-10 minutes with some washing up liquid (it emulsifies and helps to remove oils/fats) and then gently scrub it with an old tooth brush. Some of the teeth will probably fall out as you boil the head but these can put back and fixed with resin. Once you've scrubbed off as much of the remaining tissues as you can sit the skull somewhere sunny for a few days to bleach it white.

just bake it in the oven for about 40 min at 350
then boil at a simmer for 2-3 hours and all the meat will pull right off.

If you plan on doing a lot of bone collecting, invest in a tank of flesh eating beetles.

They only eat dead flesh, they're easy to take care of, and they'll leave a neat and clean skeleton from whatever carcass you toss in there.
Just dip the resulting bones in some bleach to sanitize them.

Boiling will leave a skeleton, but it smells horrific, and the bones will be fairly weak and frail afterward.

The way you're doing it, it's going to take longer to decompose, with the bone probably decaying along with it. Anaerobic conditions like underwater, in the ground, etc. will make decomposition slower.
If you have access to dry areas with anthills, that would be the best place. maybe place it in a chicken wire cage to keep animals off.
After the ants and beetles have finished it, you clean off anything else with rubbing alcohol.

Vinegar can dissolve eggshells, I suggest you don't pour it near the skull.

Most animals hate: Garlic, onions, citrus, and capsaicin.

burying it will slow the process of decomposition tho

OP here, I don't really have access to that, I'm just in an apartment house in the city and there's a little wooded area at the back of the place that's shared so I can't really be setting up cages. There is a small deck connected to my place, I suppose I could move it there, I don't know if that would work or how to really protect it from raccoons. I don't really want to attract ants to my place either, especially since I share with apartments on all sides. It still has the skin and eyes and all, so I at least want that stuff to kind of break down first, without the skin getting leathery. I was hoping the bacteria in the ground would do that part for me.

Beetles are what I used for the cow skull, but they belonged to the school, they weren't mine. I don't really do this often enough to make it worthwhile to get my own. But they do work great.

For now I just put some vinegar on top of the rocks and further away as a perimeter, then sprinkled cayenne pepper on top of the rocks too in case something starts sniffing around it'll burn its snout and retreat.

OP dont put the skull in bleach. While it'll whiten up, it'll turn to powder eventually. The bleach is too harsh on the bones. Use hydrogen peroxide, 3% solution (th kind found in drugstores) or 5% (the kind for bleaching hair). A few hours to a few days is how long it'll take, depending on the skull.

That's a good looking skull, well cleaned and everything. How did you get it?
