This has been a rather problematic issue for a while and I think it needs to be addressed. Westerns, particularly cis-gendered whites have are always appropriated other cultures without any consideration for the insensitivity of their actions or the possible repercussions for this behavior.
That being said, I think we should only allow Japanese to cosplay as that is a uniquely Japanese tradition. We can still discuss it and enjoy it but I don't think socially conscious westerners should engage in cosplay. Really, when you break it down it's racist, like black face or taping back your eyelids.
At your next convention make sure you go up to every western cosplayer and explain this too them. Naturally some of them are bigoted backwards racists and will outright ignore you when you try to explain it to them by saying you're "overly sensitive" or "just don't get it", remember you have the moral high ground. Even you can only change the perspective of one person you're making a difference
