Yesterday I went to Grad-con and holy shit it was bad.
First off the whole thing took place at a college even though they had pretty high attendance but the main offense was the cosplay. Holy shit, I had now idea it was possible for so many could fail collectively. Either you were dressed up in casual cosplay, MIB agent or Harry Potter. What made was rage was that in addition to NO ONE at the con even attempted to wear a wig and that everyone cosplaying Harry Potter just used store bought robes. Honstly, that was the big series of the day and the sheer majority those people had would give Homestuck a run for its money.
The masquerade was a joke. I know in the past that we bitch and complain about bad skits with horrible dancing but I would gladly take that over what I got at this convention. 100% of the entries were walk-ons and even sillier was that these people were being called by their names. I guess since everyone cosplayed the same series that mentioning the character name would be silly. At least with bad skits i have something to laugh at, this time I was bored. Even then with each name called the audience members would go crazy blowing horns, cheering and showing off signs as if they witnessed the second coming of Christ. I don't follow Harry Potter so maybe this was a really good in-joke I missed.
You wanna know the worst part of it? EVERYONE got an award. I shit you not, this convention actually gave every single one of those cosplayers a damn award. I felt disgusted seeing these great looking certificates handed out to people who haven't even held a needle and thread in their lifetime.
This thing was a horrible waste of time and I had no idea why I even paid a badge for this damn thing.

After going to a weekend con, I finally came to terms with myself... I hate cons. Most of the time the cosplays are poor, and a large majority of them are just Vocaloids, Homestuck, and Naruto. I don't watch anime or read manga anymore, but it's not because I think it's childish - The last thing I watched about a year ago was Nichijou, and I absolutely loved it.
So on top of poor cosplays, cons are filled to the brim with kids (which makes sense), and they're always so gross and muggy because of how all the sweaty neckbears all congregate together in one tiny area. The panels are never exciting, the events are awkward, the people are gross, the game rooms are filled with LoL players and nothing else.
I don't want to say that "I'm getting too old for this" as I'm only 21, but.. I think I am. I felt this way last year too, and this year just sealed the deal. It was nice hanging out with you seagulls.
So, how was your last con? Do you feel less and less excited each year?

I cannot make it to my usual convention this year (AX) and was wondering if anyone had any info for me on other cons they like to go to. It has to be somewhere between august and mid september because of my job. I am trying to attend somewhat larger conventions since I am traceling to go and would prefer to travel if the con has more guests, panels, and cosplay. I am ok with gaming/fantasy, and anime conventions. Some I am looking into are Dragon Con and AM2, do you recommend these cons? I am worried how much anime Dragon Con has, since I am more steered towards anime and games. I wanted to go to Pax but they sold out so fast sadly. Also I will be cosplaying from Redline, Dark Souls, and maybe another. Thanks
