2013 was so weird for weather. The wind and temperature made it so cold and blustery outside, and yet because of the direct, strong sunlight, I still managed to get a really stupid Madoka neckline burn. THE WORST. I'll be more careful this year.

Not sure what I have on the roster this year. Sailor Venus, at the very least.

So I've never been to a con before, but I am VERY interested in cosplaying. I was going to go to fan expo last year, but it was last minute and I didn't end up going because I didn't want to have some last minute shite cosplay. I don't really watch many animes, but I do have basic knowledge of most popular ones now, and I am interested. Do you guys think this would be a good first con to go to? I'm probably going to fan expo anyway, and I'm more of a gamer so I figured maybe that would have more things I'm interested in.

His cosplay is really turning out so neat and accurate. I'm at a loss as what to do for a definite third cosplay, it's really between Sayla (Gundam), Narancia (JoJo, part 5), Lion (Umineko), or just using Hitagi (Bakemonogatari) since I've almost finished working on it.

Also, according to the staff in charge of the photoshoot, Dangan Ronpa isn't a big cosplay. I wanted to sign it up right now as one of the 50+ people since those are considered the big ones, but she said that a Dangan Ronpa photoshoot would not reach anywhere near that many people, and that Attack on Titan was going to get A LOT more than DR

Fuck, I just remembered.

The food, the awful Harvey's food. They were understaffed (and I even remember seeing a little girl, probably the manager's daughter or something, hand me my drink) and food wasn't cooked properly, and I hear many people succumbed to stomach ailments.

That was an issue last year. Was it ever an issue in years prior? I really hope it won't be an issue again.

On the other hand, there's still Swiss Chalet and Timmies, so I can settle for that.

I don't even know why you're hoping it's not going to be an issue. Just avoid that place, there's much better places to go to. Almost every fast food place isn't worth the lineup. Personally I love AN, so I much prefer to just go to sit-down restaurants with friends. Generally the Swiss Chalet nearby never has a line, and there's a decent sushi place across the street that has a small wait time, at worst. Might as well be comfortable eating in a nice environment, rather than trying to find a place outside to eat fast food

This puts less stress on making sure my e-mail is sent at exactly 12AM on the day table registration opens, but more stress in hoping I actually get a table at all. I'm not very lucky when it comes to lottery things.

I can't decide what cosplay I want to do yet though. I feel like if I choose something now I'm going to change my mind a month before the con starts.

This makes me think the problem was that there were so many applicants that were "decent enough" to make the cut that they didn't have enough space. Because they really can't make any judgments past that they'll just dump it on Lady Luck. It's a completely understandable solution. The problem then lies in where they choose to put the bar.
From that I can guess there was a really popular shop that had pretty substandard/bland stuff, and that it wouldn't be fair to other shops who made similar(quality?) items if they were the only ones to get in. Or if you're a cynic you can say there was a pretty shit table that was run by someone fucking a staff member and some other would-be seller(who makes similar shit) would bitch drama hardcore about it on the internet.

I'd like them to pick from a bag of gems, not a bag of... hard objects. There's a Lucky Pack joke in there somewhere.

This con could be amazing if the staff was more organized. I understand how much work it is and I know that there are many dedicated few, but it seems to me that after the con is over, they should really analyze what were the pro/con and how they can improve. Many people don't give two shits about the guests but they continue to invite the same type of guests, meanwhile their 'forum' is littered with suggestions from attendees that continue to be ignored year after year.

Last year Umbrella and AWOI was pretty good.
My boyfriend has been an AWOI fan for years and he was ecstatic.
Also the voice bank for Luka went in 2012, I got her autograph.
I don`t remember any other notable guests though.

Actually, I've been going all over social networks (facebook, tumblr, coscom, etc) to try to see if anyone is cosplaying Dangan Ronpa this year but it doesn't seem like there are many yet. I have an FB group for it, which doubles for my photoshoot at AN that I will be hosting and not that many are in there. Maybe like 10 people

Just because people aren't talking about it on social media, doesn't mean there isn't interest.
The official FB group has about a third of the maximum attendance of AN and not everyone goes out of their way to find a specialized group for their cosplay (I have a group of friends cosplaying RWBY and DR this year and none of them care about joining a facebook group about it). Maybe 20% of attendees tag their tumblr posts and look in the tag, and no one goes on coscom anymore. You just got to gauge by the general fandom.

On another note, as much as I dislike coscom, I kind of miss when shoots were organized that way. It's really messy now that everyone is doing it via facebook, there are multiple people out there who want to make photoshoots for the same series and everything just feels scattered. It's harder to know what's going on and get a say in it until the photoshoot schedule is released.

I've always hated AN for the six years I've been going. It was never good. It's only good for partying, meeting people, and honing your 'avoid the fandom' skills.

It's getting as crowded as fanexpo with none of the attractions (with regards to concentration of people), yet it still won't stop me from going. I do like to meet up there with all my cosplay bros.

Things about Canadian cons:
>It has good guests and good cosplay quality but sorely needs an attendance cap, FanExpo
>It has shitty guests but it's the only decent convention for the "less mainstream, less comic-central" people, decent cosplay quality, Anime North
>It's in buttfuck nowhere, like G-Anime, Animaritime, Kita-Con, and the ones in the West
>It's part of the Shitty GTA Cons Boom, like Con-G, ConBravo, Frostcon, or is shitty and in the middle of nowhere like Naru2U
>It's for ravers, socialites and partygoers and has to move every year because it keeps getting kicked out of venues, APop

Con-G really isn't bad; there's a lot of effort on the organizers' part. Unfortunately it's grown to be too big for any venue in Guelph. The narrow hallway in the current hotel made it tricky to move around. I guess it's a moot point since it's in its final year.

This is exactly why most of my friends have been moving onto American cons now, the con scene here is growing stale; event, guest and cosplayer/attendee-wise.

Aren't cons expensive enough as it is, and then going out of the country would make it all the more expensive? Or is it worth it for a change of scenery and environment? Since I've also considered going to American cons.

ANorth is already mainstream, that's why they put an attendance cap of 25,000 people. Because they only have about 600 staff, they CANNOT handle more than 25,000 people.

FanExpo is also mainstream, but FanExpo does not have an attendance cap, because it is a for-profit con, i.e. make-money is a priority, SCREW the con-attendees.

A lot of Canadian cosplayers also go to US cons, because if you want to make it big in the cosplay scene, you HAVE TO go to US cons. If you only go to Canadian cons, nobody will recognize you.

ConBravo and Naru2U are affiliated with ANorth. Meaning, ConBravo and Naru2U are run by ANorth staff.

Atomic Lollipop is at Ontario Science Centre this year, because they got kicked out of JCCC. They did damage to JCCC last year. The Sheraton hotel (that hosted them two years ago) also does not want APop back.

G-Anime (Gatineau, Qucbec) and Naru2U (Ottawa, Ontario) were formed as a result of a huge split from the con AC3 (AC Cubed). One group split, went to Gatineau, formed G-Anime; while the other group stayed in Ottawa, and formed Naru2U. AC3 (the con) is dead.

And even if I don't want to make it big, if I just want to enjoy conventions and their events, I should probably head to some of the US cons anyway, right? I hear Katsucon's always great and has an amazing venue, and there's even one con in the US that's near a waterpark... ColossalCon?

I'd honestly love to go to some US cons. But I'm wondering if the expense is worth it. Plus I don't really have anyone to go with me.

I don't recall actual damage, but the courtyard was a mess afterwards and the staff weren't experienced in dealing with an event like that since it's basically a community centre. I also avoided the washrooms because they were in rough shape by the end.

And the Sheraton built a restaurant in their parking lot so that's probably why they couldn't accommodate the playground anymore.

Costume-con is so expensive.
Is it even worth the $75?
I have the student discount and the student ticket is $25 (which is a huge gap, why would you even do that?)

I'm not planning on wearing an elaborate cosplay, and my bf might not cosplay at all.
We're just interested in the panels and learning more about costuming (we're both relatively new to it)
Do you think we'll stand out too much? I somehow have this idea in my head that everyone is going to be in gorgeous costumes...

What's wrong with APop? Planning to go this year.

nothing is wrong with any of those cons, and APop is included in that. APop is just infamous at this point for attracting teens and adults more prone to think damaging public property is acceptable/are too high to know they're damaging stuff.

I'm not trashing APop, I've been going since the start, but it does attract a certain crowd

Costume-Con is a four-day convention mainly dedicated to learning new things about costuming. It runs from the Friday until the Monday. You can save $20 each by doing the group rate, and you only need four people to do the group rate. I'm going with a bunch of friends. You don't have to cosplay; in fact, it might be more comfortable not to if you're there to learn. CostumeCon floats around each year so I'm excited it's local for once.
