Hey /cgl/ just curious any of you tried doing this before? Ask your friends or fans to email different cons for con appearances? I have thought about doing this before but I wonder if it works ... It would be a great way to save money and get to stay at different cons for free

Unless you have lots of fans then it won't happen. Guests are used to attract people to the con.

is that really how it works? i always wonder how people who aren't great cosplayers get invited to cons while so many people with amazing skills don't..

Are some people very lazy to work hard and save money to go to a con?

I'm guessing that's how it works

I do know some cosplayers themselves contact the con organizers and just flat out ask if they can attend the con as a guest

I think it's sort of like a photographer asking for a press badge to attend the con for free

anon con staff here, there are a few ways cosplayers are looked at for guest status.

1. They are good, the win a lot of awards, run a lot of informative panels (without being a guest), or are very active online with tutorials

2. They are popular. Name recognition will guarantee a buzz. They can just be popular without much skill (like jnig) or they can be popular because of skill (like volpin)

3. They have a reputation for being very polite or professional. They don't act like a jackass online or at cons

4. They are affordable. Maybe they are local, or don't ask for a lot. Usually unless the con is huge the budget for cosplay guests is slim to nil

5. Whoever is in charge of picking guests likes them for X reason.

Unless you have a fairly big online following, or you are local to the area it will be tough. Make sure you have several panels you can run, and if you've never run one don't bother trying. A con is paying your accommodations expecting you to work. If you have nothing to offer them you are not worth the investment.

Don't look for her and ignore her if you run into her? There are far worse people than JNig attending cons.

I've never asked someone to invite me, they've always approached me. Starting a cosplay page on FB was probably the best thing I ever did since that's how they get in contact with me. Have something to offer. they don't want someone to just stand there and look pretty in most cases. As >>6542136 said, they are expecting you to work. If you are going to approach a con about inviting you, make sure that you are prepared to offer them something that will be worth the cost to them.
