If brandy is made from grapes like wine, why does it taste so much like whiskey? Is it entirely because of the casks they're put in, or the alcohol content? And if it is the alcohol content, then why does vodka taste so foul?

I'm about to cook the first real steak in my life. My question is, what tutorial should I follow for best result? Ther are so many different things all over the interwebs. I recently also downloaded all seasons of good eats (is this /ck/ approved cooking show btw?) and the first episode is about steaks, maybe I should do it their way?

Any tea drinkers here using water filters for their tea? The water over here is a bit on the hard side. Especially green teas don't come out as nuanced as I hoped. That's why I was wondering if I could maybe improve the taste of my tea by getting a water filter. There are some questions I have though: The water filters seem quite large and expensive. Are they single use only or can they be used several times? How much water can be filtered with one filter? Does it noticeably improve the quality of your tea?

Hello /ck/, I live in the middle of a backwater town in Nebraska. I'm trying to make some Japanese style dishes, but the nearest city is out of the question to run to for ingredients (hours of driving) and my town is too small to have an Asian specialty isle beyond soy sauce. Is there some sort of website that I can order off of and have ingredients sent by mail? I hate using substitutes and want to avoid using them at all costs. tl;dr Is there an Asian supermarket site that mails across America?

Just want to make sure that I am taking care of my cast iron correctly. So after I cook with it I scrub it down with hot water and a stiff brush (no soap). Then I dry and coat in a bit of olive oil. Am I doing it right? Also, what would you consider kitchen essentials? For me it is cast iron skillet, pot, and a nice knife.

since tomorrow is NYE, let's have a thread about alcohol. my favourite alcohol is (hard) cider and vodka. i drink them because i can't stand the taste of beer. vodka is nice because it gets you drunk faster, tastes better and you don't have to pee from it as much as from beer. cider is nice because it tastes better than beer. i know a lot of people that can't stand the taste of vodka and they always mix it with orange juice. i think it tastes better without orange juice.

After a year of excited anticipation...I missed my present from heartsonfire. Haven't had stable Internet access until just recently, and am oh so very full of the sad. Would it be possible to get a link from any of you fine folks?
