When will I become a better cook?

I've been taking cooking and food pretty seriously for the past few months, as I also have been concerned with my diet (trying to lose weight).
But everything I cook tastes mediocre. I don't know what I do wrong, I just follow the top-rated online recipes on allrecipes.com to the exact point. Yes, it may be low fat, but I even try cooking the normal dishes SOMETIMES and they do not come out good. I also dish out extra cash on the more expensive ingredients. The only thing I can make that requires any thinking is pasta, but even then I buy sauce. So that's a no brainer. Why do I fail?
Do I just keep doing it? Or should I not take recipe websites too literal?
