Some friends and myself are planning a Lord of the Rings marathon next weekend and we want to cook "authentic" food from middle earth, mostly as snacks. Intermediate beer homebrewer here (i can clone most commercial brews etc.) I am looking for some inspiration. I am thinking about brewing a beer with a strong malt body with light hop character plus some adjuncts like fruit and/or spices. What would you put in beer? Anything goes, i think the only materials i shouldn't use are stuff with living organisms because those can infect my fermentation. Basically i am looking for inspiration from other fields of the culinary arts. Pic related, i am thinking about boiling a mixture of the things you guys mention in the topic and adding it to the wort before fermentation.

Ok /ck/, I give in. You've pushed me enough, I'm going almond milk. But how the hell do I get it as cheap as cow's milk?? It's extremely expensive in my local supermarket, and I drink quite a lot of milk too. I saw you can buy it powdered online, is that worth looking into? Or should I go for another milk entirely? I like pretty much every non-dairy (apart from soy)

I've decided to practice my Swedish a little, and as such, I thought it would be nice to do it by translating recipes from an original Swedish source. As such, I thought I might as well share the results, as maybe someone here might even have an use for them. Hasselbacka potatoes with garlic and västerbotten-cheese. Sourced from http://www.kokaihop.se/recept/hasselbackspotatis-med-vitlok-och-vasterbottensost 1: Pre-heat oven to 225'C. 2: Peel potatoes. Set them on a wooden spoon, and score them into thin slices without cutting through. 3: Lay the scored potatoes scored side up on an oven tray. 4: Melt butter in a pan, and sautee garlic slices in it. 5: Brush the potatoes with the garlic butter. Sprinkle on salt. Bake the potatoes for 30 minutes, then brush on more garlic butter, sprinkle on shredded cheese, and bake an additional 15 minutes until potatoes are soft.
