I actually want to see this, given the reviews. I do have a few questions, though:

-Does the movie open with first-person narration where we go through one of the characters lives?
-Does the movie have narration for more than the beginning and end?
-Does the movie have one of those scenes where the hero loses everything, their friends hate them, and the music goes really quiet with a piano trying to play this as WAAHSOSAD?

Honest question. Those're the only real dealbreakers for me.

Kind of a sad opposite of climax thing, but not quite character loses everything, just one character upset at another for a little bit.

We need to wait for the full weekend numbers to come in before making too hasty an assessment.

>Friday AM Update: Thursday preview numbers are coming in and Disney's Zootopia brought in $1.7 million on Thursday night. This is a bit of an improvement on Big Hero 6's $1.4 million Thursday number ahead of its $56.2 million opening in November 2014. Additionally, it more than doubles Home's $650,000 from Thursday previews last March before opening with $52.1 million and more than triples the $400,000 The LEGO Movie started off with in February 2014 before opening with $69 million.

I saw it a few hours ago. Absolutely loved it. It's great to actually see a family movie where the characters are written as adults rather than children in adult bodies. The whole movie was refreshingly adult. I think kids will still love it, obviously, but it doesn't feel like this was a kids' movie with some jokes sprinkled in for the adults. It feels more like a movie that aimed to entertain teens and adults while still being accessible enough for kids to enjoy.

The fact that the movie is almost 2 hours long is also really interesting and it's part of what makes the movie good. The story is a lot more complicated and has many more beats than I think would have been possible if it had followed the usual 90 minutes or less mantra of most animated films. Disney took a risk making the movie longer, but I think it definitely paid off in terms of the story. There was never a moment where I felt like "okay the movie is over now" only for it to pull the rug out and drag things out longer-- it was very well paced and it never ran out of twists and turns to keep the audience guessing about what will happen next.

The characters were extremely lovable, and the relationship and chemistry between Nick and Judy is really where the movie's soul is. I can say that the fan shipping over them was not overhyped because even though they never get romantic in the movie, they managed to make a relationship that the audience can root for. Whether it's romantic or not, there were clearly budding feelings of caring between the two that the viewer wants to see succeed, and I felt genuinely invested.

A lot of Disney's recent CG movies have been pushing past the 100-minute mark, actually. Wreck-it-Ralph is the longest at 120 minutes. I think one of the reasons why it might feel longer is due to the lack of musical numbers, and so everything that happens is pushing the story forward one way or another.

It's only around two hours long with trailers included. Actual movie is 1:36:28. Then 0:03:29 of dancing, followed by 0:08:28 of slow, slow scrolling text with no post-credits scene. And maybe a five-second rating tag if the projectionist remembered to put one on there.

>Did anyone else feel the racial undertones were a bit much?

At some points, maybe. Fortunately they didn't make the mistake of using any particular animal as an allegory of a real life race or demographic. All of them have their own unique quirks and problems that they are trying to work around that don't line up exactly with just one real life group, and I think just about anyone can relate to what the characters go through.

Even Nick's explanation for why he became a con man felt like it was bigger than some kind of direct allegory for anyone in particular. Everyone accuses foxes of being dishonest and crafty, so he stopped trying to fight it and became what everyone already said he is. Some people will interpret this as being applicable to black people, but you could just as easily compare his statement to boys of any color who are feeling out of place in schools where they are treated like defective girls.

There are so many ways that you can interpret each individual struggle that all the different animals have, that it makes the story's message about tolerance have a more universal appeal and it doesn't really feel preachy. Everyone's gotten a hard time at some point in their life from other people judging them, and the movie really taps into that.

The racial undertones felt a bit overblown but it also felt a bit more natural. The differences between citizens in Zootopia can be pretty fucking massive. Literally. (Little Rodentia citizens compared to the Megafauna police officers)

As for Shakira, probably because with her career having kind of faded she was easier to access than say Lady Gaga and they wanted one celebrity pop singer to basically be an in universe pop idol.

Frankly, I felt if nothing else, Shakira/Gazelle got a bit overused and it seemed as if no one in that world listened to any other artist. (But apparently they have their own version of Guns and Roses according to Judy's playlist)

Besides, we're not dealing with stand-ins for various human ethnicities here. There are actual and relevant measurable differences in many ways across the entire spectrum of animals. Physiologically, there's going to be some sprayable substance that foxes react to but rabbits don't. So that's there.

I like how instead of the movie making the obvious one sided predator/prey thing to where on group was harassed, they managed to show both the prey acting like dicks as well as the predators, and the development between Nick and Judy stems from them getting over their trauma and learning to accept the other as not being bad.

My friends loved the fact that they never hooked them up in the movie and kept them as friends, but I like them being a couple.

What? You have to stop projecting what you want to see on the movie man. It's main theme was about perception and determination. It very clearly showed a great many differences between the species and that it was okay. Not everything is perfect but you make it work.

Like with the bunny cop thing. They showed very well why there aren't bunny cops but that Judy is exceptional. The discrimination was very even-handed for predators and prey. It's easily the biggest reason why the movie didn't suck fucking balls.

Yeah that's true. The movie was smart in that they don't say do like stupid and condescending like, for example, making it out to be "predators are immigrants" or "prey are white people." Everyone is kind of on equal footing because they've all been in the city since the start, and all the problems and stereotypes they have to deal with are specifically due to what types of animals they are. That gives the movie a much broader appeal and more universal message than if they had targeted a specific racial issue and then put an animal-shaped wrapper around it.

Poor Dreamworks is going to get smacked at the Oscars by Disney again next year.

In this case though, I can say in all fairness that I thought Zootopia was a better movie than Kung Fu Panda 3, and even though I liked KFP3 it will be lucky if it gets nominated just because there's so many animated movies coming out this year. KFP3 is a good threequel however Zootopia is a great movie, period.

HTTYD2 still got robbed though. That wasn't right.

So is it legitimately plausible that in Zootopia 2, it could end with Nick and Judy getting married? It's been a while since we had a Disney movie that ended with a wedding scene, and if they spent two movies building up their relationship then it would be satisfying to the audience. I'm pretty sure the last Disney movie with a wedding was The Princess and the Frog in 2009 (Rapunzel and Flynn got married but they didn't actually show it in Tangled).

If Rescuers Down Under had tried to fit a wedding scene in it wouldn't have really worked because they probably wanted to wait until they got back to America. It ended at the perfect moment, with the audience knowing that their job is done, they're going home and they're going to get married.

Zootopia essentially ended with a dance party. If the sequel has another "dance party ending," then Nick and Judy's wedding is the perfect segue into that.

I'm not sure if Disney would rather have Zootopia get nominated for best picture and lose, or get nominated for best animated picture and win. I guess it all depends on what the live action competition this year is, but historically going for best picture is a major gamble that hasn't paid off yet. It would have to be a year without an obvious front runner for best picture, and the academy being desperate for a crowd pleaser movie.

Ironically, Zootopia is a movie with a strong message about race relations, but the academy is pretty much obligated right now to give best picture to a movie with a black lead this year because of all the diversity / affirmative action bullshit they've been promising. If they gave best picture to an animated movie the year after they promised to start nominating more black actors and movies featuring black actors, then it would probably cause a shit storm all of its own, especially if the victim industry decides to play up the main actors in Zootopia being white.

That could be an interesting point of contention in the movie. Nick and Judy getting into a romantic relationship could mean they can't spend time together professionally. They do the whole disclosure form thing and can't be partners anymore, which maybe would even lead Nick to consider quitting the force because he's not enjoying doing policework without Judy. It would be an interesting conflict to introduce during the second act, although how it would be resolved would be a whole other challenge.

I agree with that. In my own, autistic mind, this is sort of the ideal openerin my head for a sequel, spoilers for faggotry.

Open sup in a wedding chapel, Judy walking down the aisle as the bride. Waiting for her is Nick in a tux. Blah blah, wedding ceremony, Nick and Judy make some really corny lovey dovey exchanges.

Suddenly, burglars fucking everywhere.

Nick pulls out a tranq gun from his tux while Judy cocks her bouquet revealing her own tranq gun is hidden inside, followed by ZPD swarming in. Cue a chase scene with the lead robber and Nick and Judy in hot pursuit. Teamwork happens and they bring the guy down.

Cue title

Flash to Nick and Judy now off getting off duty and discussing their recent case (mostly teasing and flirting about the fake marriage thing) and then heading out to enjoy a weekend together at a karaoke place, they sing, and as they sing we get a montage of the daily lives as of late, the good and the bad

And that's all I got.

Did anyone noticed just how many times they said "death," "die," "kill," etc. in this movie? Not only that, but there were characters who said it casually in derogatory ways like "my mom says she hopes you die." It's like Disney heard everyone complaining about Big Hero 6's adherence to the "never say kill" rule and so they threw it out the window as hard as they could. Good on them.

Also, I am positive I heard someone say "hell" somewhere in there. As far as profanity goes that's pretty softcore, but if it's in an animated Disney movie at all then that's pretty edgy.

They showed the wound in the beginning, and they also showed Judy tripping over a sharp object and cutting her leg badly later in the movie. You can see a red, shiny wound where the cloth is torn. The movie seems to have tried as hard as they plausibly could not to dumb itself down for the sake of being kid-friendly.

The one obvious instance of self censorship is that there were no private parts in the nudist scene, although clearly they're meant to be visible to Nick and Judy.

Rare but not unprecedented. The Grand Budapest Hotel was released in March 2014 and still got a Best Picture nomination. The timing of movies intended to compete for Academy Awards is usually towards the end of the year so they're still hopefully in theaters by the time nominations are announced so they can get a few more tickets out of it. But a film being done with its run and moving on to Blu-ray by then doesn't specifically hurt it.

You have to wonder how things would've gone if Judy hadn't gone full retard and simply taken the case instead of trying to steal the entire train car.

On one hand, they be able to get the Night Howler sample to the ZPD faster, but on the other, Bellwether would never have exposed herself. So they'd potentially get the cure, but not the culprit and Dawn would still be in power.

That did beg the question of guns in this setting. You could almost argue they were never conceived considering how so many Zootopians are giant animals with dense bone and armored skin and so many would be too small to use them.

also, kind of off-topic, but the trailer for jungle book impressed me in how Baloo's facial animations actually kind of looked like Bill Murray's facial movements.

Of course on the same token having a police officer and about a dozen criminals who can finger you is enough to put you on trial and give them time to dig up any other evidence like money trails, more evidence, and throw in assault or two.

I was a little disappointed they didn't mention man, not even in the museum scene.

It just really had some elements that were sci-fi that would have been neat, like the gigantic heaters used to make artificial biomes, the fact that all these species evolved suddenly and haven't changed to much, and that these species even know what they were like back then.

I suppose the biggest sci-fi thing is that besides the whole howler thing a city that size had no other missing person cases. Maybe having 400lbs brutes for a police force is a deterrent from violent crime.

But I guess going all Inherit the Earth would be a movie in of itself.

Pretty good movie overall

He's a fun character concept that fits a stereotype and breaks a stereotype in bad ways that he makes indearing. His design and expressions are fun to look at and makes good use of the medium. Personality wise, he's that type of person you wish you knew who could liven up a room just by being in it. He's socially aware enough to make a sincere effort to not be too annoying.

And he got dat ass.

Eh it's his opinion, even if I disagree with it myself. I still like most of his other work though. It's like those animu podcast guys that called Tomino a bad director or called Yasuhiko's solo work "dull" and "a slog", even though I like some of the other things they've done, or for a more board specific point, John K. Point is, you just gotta bear with them even if they say shit that's not really agreeable in nature.
