Why haven't imperial measurements been outlawed on penalty of death.. The metric system follows the logic of common maths. everyone who uses imperial should be sent to Africa to die of ebola.

Hi /diy/ ! I am a student in physics & mechanical engineering and I have to lead a research project over this school year. It must be based on a rather simple question (e.g How to optimize the efficiency of a windmill, Why are there tires on a car, etc...). (these are some subjects my classmates are addressing). I have to do theoretical research, lead an experiment. From this experiment I must extract and synthesise my results/measures and try to answer the main question. I am desperately in need of ideas. Have you got any leads ? Ideas of domains of study ? Questions you have always dreamt to answer ? > tl;dr I need help finding a subject for a mechanics engineering and physics research project

Old thread: >>708779 >I'm new to electronics, where do I get started? There are several good books that are commonly recommended for beginners and those wanting to learn more. There are also plenty of good Youtube channels that teach about the basics as well as advanced concepts. The best way to get involved in electronics is just to make stuff. Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty. Take something apart or build something you find cool on one of the many electronics websites. >What books are there? How do you cap a bottle on your own without specialized tools? I would purchase a handheld one, but the time it would take to be shipped to be would take too long and the date I need this done would have come and gone.

Alright, check the picture. It's a hardwood floor, there's damage. Lovely family member moved a very heavy object on wheels across the room and left these tracks in the floor. If it's not apparent from the picture, they're very visible indents, maybe a milimeter deep into the wood. The tracks are long, very visible across multiple individual boards. Filling this with wood filler would interrupt the grain, it would look horrible. My question to you is: Is this at all fixable without redoing the entire floor? Can I call the floordude and ask him to level just part of the floor and expect that the fixed section will fit seamlessly with the rest of the floor? Answers very much appreciated, my nerves are frayed here and I have murder on my mind.

So a buddy just hooked me up with about 20 gallons of silver nitrate from an electroplating facility. It's what was left over after they used it. He said that the concentration of silver nitrate in the solution is still very high. What would be my best way of extracting the silver from this knowing there is an unknown contaminant in it?

Selling knives

Recently finished my first knife and I was wondering what standard a knife had to be before it is considered sell-able? I don't plan to quit my day job or anything but if I was able to make it a monetarily self sufficient hobby it would be nice. Pic is the knife: not flattering lighting but it gives a foundation to work up from

Hey DIY, I saw a deal at a fleamarket the other day and had to take it. Got 3x 60V 68,000uF capacitors for 5 bucks. I don't even know what I need them for but it seemed like a good deal. Any ideas on project I can use these for? They look exactly like pic attached.

Hello fellas. I need to edit a video of me giving a short speech about my work trajectory for a job application. I was just wondering if any of you know any free, simple video editor software I can use to add some images to it? I'm totally new to editing vids, I've actually never done it before so any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Pic unrelated

Linear actuator / Self reversing screw

12 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: ]
Okay you guys have been instrumental in one of my projects in giving me really great advice so I'm looking for some more of the same. I am building a instructable coil winder from their website http://www.instructables.com/id/Pro-quality-pickup-winder-3000-RPM-pickup-winder-w/all/ However I would like to add a linear actuator or a reversible screw. A linear actuator (in front) http://www.amacoil.com/images/articles01-1.jpg Or A reversible screw (with animation ;) http://wktodd.webspace.virginmedia.com/animations/Self%20reversing%20screw%201.gif Either would not be hard to add onto this unit either in front or on top. I plan to attach either to the main drive system of the winder with a gear system and belt as to keep the same speed so it does not vibrate or loose windings. Now my question is does anyone have any good information on how to build either one of these systems or how to find a reasonably priced system for under $50? Thank you and advance for all your help.

whats the idea of having your own electronic lab? Do you guys even have enough time/money or stamina to keep working in the same stuff you do on your work after working all day in all this electronic puzzles?

Hey, /diy/ I'm here to ask about making consoles portable. I've been really wanting to build a portable PS2 for a while because I've a lot of games I want to play on-the-go, but I don't want to dump a ton on a gaming laptop, plus some games don't emulate well. How should I approach this project, though? I want one that can still play discs, but could also optionally load ISOs from an external source like any modded PS2 could. Obviously, a Slim motherboard will be needed... Pic related. I want to aim for something similar to this, but I feel it'll be considerably more time and cost-consuming.

Hey /diy/ngbats. I recently acquired a small jointer/planer cheaply from a stranger. They assured me it worked and I believed them. Well it doesn't work. The blades spin freely, as does the motor. When flip the switch I get nothing. No movement, no noise. I tried removing the drive belt and still nothing from the motor. Tried giving it a twirl and it still doesn't respond. The wiring looks fine, though I can't check it with a meter right now. I know the power source is good, I use it for all of my other tools including a table saw. Pic related is the motor in question. I'm suspecting a power switch, so I'll be getting a meter tomorrow to check it out. The motor is no longer in production so if the switch is good, how do I go about troubleshooting the motor? Thanks in advance. And I know I could just toss the thing or demand a refund but that's not the point, is it?

Have any of you dealt with zoning regulations for protected wildlife areas? I've got some land I want to fence off but there's a now-dry swamp that has a bit of wildlife. The wildlife wouldn't bother me and I could put up fencing that doesn't bother the wildlife. I know it depends on my county, I'm just wondering if anyone has encountered any issues similar to this.

Wiring an MP3 decoder.

35 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: ]
So I bought this little MP3 decoder from Hong Kong. It wasn't clear in the picture what inputs and outputs it came with but doesn't it seem to be missing a set? The two red are for the positive and negative power in (although I've never seen those marked as B+ and B- before). And the ones next to it say L+ L- and R+ R- which are for the audio channels either input or output. So if they're for audio input / output. Where are the pins for output / input? Are they missing?
