Okay /diy/, I've decided I want to go full off grid. Planning on going somewhere in Europe. Maybe Scotland. I've tried reading some of the websites and getting a feel for how I should do it, but I figured coming here and asking directly would be better. Firstly, would I have to buy a plot of land to build, or would I be able to build in the middle of nowhere? Would I need a building permit or anything? Secondly, would solar paneling or hydropower work better for electricity? Does anyone know of any good solar panel building tutorial/instructions? Thirdly, how would I tell if there is water near where I am? I'm planning on building a well, but have no idea how to tell where to put it. Finally, how big would this house need to be? Thanks for any help.

hey /diy/ i have an issue with an overheating laptop so i decided to make a cooling apparatus based on the design here: http://www.tacticalgamer.com/hardware-software-discussion/91613-110cfm-laptop-cooler.html pic related is my general design but i want to know what changes can i make to the structure to ensure the air reaches all the hot spots as signified by the red boxes.

Wine

Hi, I'm making for a friend who is a wine-producer a limited edition wine-pack. The idea is to make 12 bottles with 12 different wine labels. Every bottle is dedicated to an other author including a wine quote. So far I found only 3 good wine quotes. Baudelaire, Remarque and Lovecraft. I searched for quotes from Jack London, Bukowski and Poe but couldn't find any good ones. Would love to have some suggestions from you… The quotes must be in a depressive or melancholic mood. I'm currently struggling with live and wine gives me some relief… hehe An other thing is that there should be a photo portrait of the person (so not lived before 1840) do you know any? thanks.

'scope probes

Hey /diy/ i recently bought an old Hameg oscilloscope. There were two probes with it, one is an X1 and the other one has some frequency compensation built into it (or what it is called, it has a resistor and cap parallel inside it) The second probe is an old Tektronix and even has a patent number: http://www.google.com/patents/US2883619?dq=2,883,619&hl=en&sa=X&ei=KrWbUO_8OIrbtAaVrIDYC g&ved=0CDQQ6AEwAA So the question is, what are some good probes? X1/X10 function would be nice, and the ones we use at school have a plastic shroud around the BNC plug. I'm a Europeon so it would have to be a european store selling them. Thanks! >Pic related, same model

Hello /diy/. Me and my partner for materials class would like to construct a small-scale, operating hot air balloon that also incorporates the Japanese spinning lantern's revolving inner layer embellished with designs. For reference, the spinning lantern I am pertaining to is the Japanese mawari-dori (????). Here is a diagram I have included about how a mawari-dori works: http://www.magiclamp.ca/about.html The mawari-dori's spinning design hinges on the fact that the hot air current rises up and pushes the vents of the top of the inner layer. All of the mawari-dori lanterns I have seen on the internet have open tops, for the heat to escape. So my question is, given that I will be incorporating the mawari-dori with a hot air balloon, will the hot air balloon's characteristic of having a closed top to trap heat and enable flight, interfere with the spinning of the inner layer, because there wouldn't be anywhere for the heat to escape through?
