Hey, I made a /diy/ wiki: 4wiki.org/diy/ So the community can collaborate on comprehensive articles about blacksmithing, metal casting, homebrewing, etc. Eventually, if it's successful, we could put a link in the sticky and direct people to it.

So, I'm working on a project and I need to run some wires and install some LED's, a battery, and 3 separate switches. If any of you play the Halo Series, you should recognize this helmet. I'm wanting to install LEDs where the blue arrows point. 2 LEDs will be on the exterior of the helmet which will be hooked up to a switch. 2 LEDs will be hooked up to the interior of the helmet to illuminate my face through the reflective visor (not shown). This should also be hooked up to a switch. Where the gray arrow points, I want to install a very small fan to ventilate the helmet. (its symetrical, so there will be one on the other side as well.) These will be hooked up to a switch. What I need help with is this: How do I wire the circuit? Should it be 3 separate circuits? Or am I able to put it into 1 or 2? What battery should power the LEDs? What battery should power the fans? What kind of wires would I need? Where would I find the materials needed to execute this project?

Building a Rock house

I am purchasing some property in central NM. I want to build a rock house on my property. The area is in the foot hills and granite rocks are in abundance. any advice including tips or links to find info about this huge project would be greatly appreciated. I will be mostly me and my father building the house he is a contractor but he has never built with rocks. He build a rammed earth house in the early 80s. The house has to be at least 600 square feet and have 2 bedrooms. The area is near a not so good town and the house would have to be fairly secure to keep people out.

Happy New Year, /diy/. How close did I come to dying in a house fire? Do you think it was a defective wall socket or a defective plug, or was the space heater just drawing too much current? Pic 1/3

Matching voltage for dc fan

The fan is supposed to work with 5V and 340mA. I made the circuit shown (it is a power transistor with a heat sink), and it provided 340mA but the voltage across the transistor was only 5V and the fan had 8V across it. Why would this be?

Hey does anyone use colored light bulbs? If so could you post a picture of them in action? I was thinking of buying a red, black and blue one for my bedroom for ambiance. >not sure if this is the right thread to post this.

So I may be buying an anvil for Blacksmithing soon. There is a nearby farrier who is willing to sell one of his (stand included) for some $300. Just have some questions before I talk to him about it. While I'm not sure it's specifically a farrier anvil, would a farrier anvil be useable for regular Blacksmithing? What should I look for, regarding condition? For example I know an anvil face with many dents and scars isn't worth it, but beyond that I'm not sure what I should be looking for.

So I have six of these beautiful cobalt blue hobnail votive holders. Only problem is they have a stud on the bottom because they are intended to be used in taper holders. I'd like to remove the stud and grind the bottom flat, to use them as regular votive holders. Any ideas on how to accomplish this?

2nd year mechanical engineering student here. What are some fun projects I could do related to my field? Im joining formula student team next year but Id like to get some standalone experience prior (both for fun and knowledge). Anything related to mechanics, robotics etc will do. Bonus if not too much money involved.

Hi /diy/ Me and my friends have built a solar powered sound system for a festival and want to be able to transport it, whilst playing it. In total the system weighs approximately 200kg (including DJ) We were thinking cargo bike but the cargo areas rarely are capable of holding 200kg nor are they big enough (needs to be at least 1.2m wide and 1.2m long). A farm trailer would be ideal but we're unsure of how to pull it. Perhaps some sort of off road trike with efficient gearing that couples to the trailer. So if you had to carry 200kg across a field using a device based on one mans power, how would you do it? Pic related: It's a boominator, we're using one as part of the soundsystem

So I am assembling cubes minus the bottom and tops. They are cut at 45degrees and I'm trying to glue them together tightly. I did that one by putting bungie cords around the top and bottom. Having trouble getting clamps to make a tighter seal. Any ideas/advice. May use screws or nails to tighten the box.

Is there a way to make a model train that works in a fish tank? I was just wondering if /diy/ had any input.
