Manual powered wooden drill press

1 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: ]
I /diy/! I don't want this thread to stay around too long, but I've have had an idea to make a drill press completely out of scrap wood (which I have tons of) that is powered manually. I've drawn plans of a general idea of what I want to make and I'm having trouble figuring out how I would mount a drill bit whether it be for a drill or for an actual drill press. Also I'm having trouble designing the power component of it. I figured a hand crank with a way to turn the rotation vertical i.e. a gear train would work, but a foot pedal system like those used for an old fashioned pottery wheel would be more handy. Basically I'm looking for suggestions and ideas for the problems I'm having. Any shared experience with making wooden gears would also be appreciated.

Making a custom mixtape

I'm not sure if this is the correct board to be posting on, but whatever. My wife and I's anniversary is coming up soon and along with a few big things I've planned, I'd like to make her a mixtape of all the music we used to listen to when we were kids. I remember seeing my dad do it so he had stuff to listen to in his car, but on my own I'm clueless. I have empty cassettes and the vinyl's of the songs I want to record. My main issue is I would also like to include a little message with my voice between each song. So, what would I need for this whole process to go down? Any help at all would be appreciated!

Hi there guys! Check this out, kinda like legos but you can build something were you can store / stay. Might be interesting to someone (im not in Switzerland so I don't know what the shipping fees might be), but for a short cost you get a nice outside room.

hey /diy/. I've decided to make a dreamcatcher for my girlfriend, and the making process itself doesn't really seem too complicated, but I'm not sure where can I get a metal ring that I could use as a frame. Maybe you have any ideas where could I buy one from, or what household items could I use to make one? Thanks Also, if you tried making a dreamcatcher in a past and have any advices for me, I'd be glad to hear them.

Would a wrench made out of different wrench head sizes work and would it be convenient? Think about it for longer than 3 seconds pl0x

I'm looking to make a faraday container for the GPS tracker in my company vehicle. It uses a tracking system that contacts both cell towers and GPS satellites to report vehicle location. Before I was able to just unplug the device from the car's OBDII port and the receiver would think the car was stationary/off until it was plugged back in, now the device reports any loss of power so that is no longer an option. I've wrapped the tracker (approximately 12"x4"x1" under the dash) in aluminum foil and this effectively blocks GPS satellite reception but the unit still reports to the tracking system when the car is turned off and on but shows it stationary (meaning it is still maintaining cell tower reception). Ideally I would like to block all ability for the device to send/receive signal at all. I have read that to block outgoing signals the faraday cage must be grounded (else it acts as an antennae itself) and this is possibly why outgoing signals are still getting through on the cell frequencies. Also possibly a better material choice would net better results. IIRC the wavelengths I'm trying to block are around 30cm. Thoughts?

18650 pcb

I'm looking to build my own power bankout of harvested 18650s, i have some 2600mah cells that still retain about 2300mah capacity, could I get one pcb and connect it to 5 batteries, or should I use 1 pcb per battery? Also could i connect a micro usb directly to the pcb? Or should I get a charging circuit?

Shotgun Shell destructible usb?

9 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: ]
So I was just browsing Boing Boing and I saw a fairly cool looking video on turning a .40 cal shell casing into casing for a set of earbuds, I liked the idea (and have some spare earbuds that I don't use too much anyhow) but I don't have any .40 cal shell casings. I do however have a 12 gauge shotgun shell that I uh.. disassembled.. for science a while back, and so I've been thinking of fun diy stuff I could do with a shotgun shell, and it occurred to me I could make a destructible flash drive (a la the thermite destructible hard drive I'm sure many of you have seen, it won some data erasure competition a year or two back) using the shell, its original powder and a flash drive. What do you think about this idea/any other ideas for fun projects I could do with that shell?

Hello, I'm not from around these parts, but I come to you seeking advice. I've recently been hired for some painting jobs by using the "fake it till you make it" approach. Problem is, my experience painting is amateur at best, and always for someone else's crew. I know little about going to a site by myself, doing the job, and all the rest that goes with. /diy/, I come to you for help. What do I need to know about painting to successfully pull these jobs off? Its all interior work for now, and nothing too complicated. Give me anything you think I should know, I am a blank page. I faked it and faked it well, now I need to make it.

How do I measure my punch force?

6 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: ]
All right dudes I tried to measure my punching power by punching a dial scale, after attaching it to a wall, with my boxing gloves. problem is when I threw a punch with the correct form (i.e throw snapping punch, incorporate feet twist shoulders etc. and quickly bring it back to guard) it wouldn't budge, hell even when I threw haymakers is would only go up like 5 pounds. But when I kept my fist on the scale and then applied pressure that was the only time it would move up. What am I doing wrong ? You guys can try it yourselves. Any help would be extremely appreciated. (This was originally posted on /asp earlier today. It's still on front page if you want to view it, same pic. I was told this section would help

Hey, I really need to light up a cigaret but I don't have matches nor lighter... what can I do ?

I need to cut a couple of ~50mm holes in some thin steel (I think it is, anyway: I should probably check). This is not something I do very often so it'll involve a handheld drill and a hole saw. However it seems like some sort of cutting fluid might a good idea, so I ask you, oh /diy/ 1) Is it? 2) Is there anything I can use that doesn't require me to go purchase a gallon of the stuff which I'll never, ever, use again subsequently?
