I just bought brand new files for the first time. They're NOS Nicholson (USA-made). I've heard that new files should be "broken in" by filing brass and other soft metals for a while before filing steel. How long should I spend filing brass before I can move on to mild steel? Or is it okay to use a new file on steel so long as I use light pressure? Also, is it necessary to keep separate files for aluminum?

There is a really annoying clicking noise coming from my computer's PSU. I know it's the PSU, and I know it's not its fan. Has this happened to anyone else? What could it be? Recorded it: http://vocaroo.com/i/s1ddXMOu21nJ

does anyone else DIY in anticipation of the end of the "easy life" based on cheap oil and overuse of nonrenewables?

Sup /diy/ I'm a poorfag. Being that I live right around abandoned warehouses, buildings, and train yards I thought there might be something worth value in there. How do I find copper wire to scrap? What else of value is good to scavenge?

/diy/, make me aware of some basic thermography and how could I improve the situation. The pic is made from outside. The windows are supposed to be new, triple glass. Northern Europe, so heat insulation is important. You can see that there are three places that the heat is leaking from. Is this normal that: 1) the place you this gypsum stuff on the wall is where the heat is leaking? 2) the place where the window connects to the frane is where the heat is also leaking? 3) the place where the glass pane is connected to the frame is where the heat is leaking as well? Thanks

Building Insect Terrariums

Looking to make small cubes with plexiglass and maybe something else at the edges. The purpose would be to hold insects (I would drill some holes in the sides) and I can't really find anything like this because all the ones online are curved or for plants. How hard would it be to make something like a 4-5 inch cube with thin plexiglass walls and removable top? How much would it cost per cube? Pic is about what I expect it should look like, but I am also unsure how to make the removable top, maybe a hinge? Any suggestions would help!

Hello all and happy holidays. I just moved in to a new house and my room has this huge hole leading to the living room and kitchen. The noise can be unbearable at times and the lack of privacy is frustrating. so I've been thinking of ways to cover up said hole that would block out some of the sound. I can't do any construction because we are only renting the house but i was thinking of filling it in with some sort of foam or Styrofoam blocks, then painting it or covering it with a curtain. any thoughts or advice is greatly appreciated.

Does anyone have any experience with sewing from patterns and perhaps pleating? I'm trying to sew a male hakama from this video tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-x8FzXetBc0 but due to my retardedness with numbers and sizings (why I tend to always give up and just eyeball shit and produce inelegant looking, if practical, results) I can't seem to wrap my head around it. I can't correlate the measurements required at the start of the video with the template and scaling it properly is alien to me and I could use a good hand from someone experienced.

I built a few "growbuckets". They're just buckets full of water, nutrient and air stones in the bottom. The plants were started in a "fogponics" bucket which is working perfectly with perfect white roots, but when I place them in the "deep water culture" bucket the roots rot and the plants die. I think the water doesn't have enough oxygen, so I'm thinking... is it possible to use an air pump to create some kind of water spray in the water buckets? Kinda like an aerosol can. That's one of the options I'm considering. The other one is using my fogponics controller to make a pump fill the buckets every two minutes and let the water drain out into a bigger reservoir, that way the roots will have time to breath and never dry out.

So I'm trying to make a plague doctor mask and in the picture I made a draft version made of EVA foam and stitched it with waxed string; But I plan on making it with leather at the final step. I just wanted to get an opinion on it's design and colour (either black or brown). The design isn't entirely my creation but I adapted it from a couple of sources. Looks okay? Any improvements? Even any tips for leathercrafting?

Hey /diy/. Any advice on how to clean up some of my memorabilia? I was shocked to check on it and see the state it was in. I'm fairly sure that it's salt corrosion. (The white patches). Not sure what the metal is though.

Remind me, folks. After the apocalypse, what fuels still work for vehicles? How long do they last? What can be done to make them last longer? No need to go into how to retrofit vehicles so that they can use other fuels, yet.
