Hey /diy/, i recently bought a sharpening stone to maintain my knives and i want to know your opinion on the technique. Ive heard contesting opinions on whether to use water, oil, or go dry. Pic related is my stone. I got a 4 dollar SS folder for work purposes. Yes i know SS is an inferior knife material, but i cant seem to get the edge i want. Either its true what they say about SS not holding a fine edge, or its just me being green.

solder wicks

Is one brand any better than the other? I know it's kind of a minor point, they're almost always no more than a few bucks, I just don't want to get stuck with some Chinese crap that won't work. Also looking for solid PCB-holding solutions; I'm considering one of those little cluster fucks with two clips and a magnifying glass but there has to be better stuff out there. Applications: circuit bending, perhaps some repair work, nothing professional or digital.

What projects could I do with an old dreamcast that doesn't work? I was just taking out all the parts and turning it into a case or something, but I would like to do something more creative and fitting for a recycled video game console.

Probable.possible scenarios when plague hits

Hello all, For this scenario, I'd like for all of us to assume a plague that hits worldwide that allows .5% of the population to live. That means 4,200 people in New York City, and 160,000 throughout the whole country. Small cities, like Boulder CO, are left with 50 people. For everyone to drop within a week or two, what plays out? 4000 people in NYC? What do they do? 50 people in Boulder? What are behaviors like? Give me your ideas on the first year, and maybe ten years in. Would love to hear your two cents.

Making instruments

Hi /diy/, This is my first post, so please forgive me for the mass amounts of autism. I'm looking for a new couple of projects and want to give creating musical instruments. Thinking maybe a cello or guitar, something that will take time, but also be badass. Not looking for professional, just good enough for me. Also, wtf is sound/tone board? I've been doing some research and am lost. Does anyone have any experience in building instruments? Or any plans they'd be willing to share? Thanks /diy/

For a physics project (im in high school), i would like to build a spot welder, similar to this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCrqLlz8Ee0 I have little experience working with very high currents, but if i take proper safety precautions, such as wearing thick gloves, proper welding goggles, etc. would it be advisable for me to attempt to build this?

What are some /diy/ YouTube channels? Specifically a channel for /diy/ home renovations. I'm buying a home but I only have a $200K budget, which is very low end in my area. Was thinking of buying a fixer upper so I can get more house/land, then put some sweat equity. But the only /diy/ thing I've ever done is install a toilet and hang a medicine cabinet. I watch the DIY Network but they teach you absolutely nothing.

I'm looking to get a kickass turntable this Christmas, which makes this piece of junk obsolete. So, I'm going to completely dismantle it and rebuild it. I'm going to 86 the speakers and make it so I just plug it in via aux. I know the whole player is shitty, i just want to make something interesting looking. Has it been done before? Can I see some builds?

Hey guys, I've googled around, called a couple of auto shops and no one seems to have a straight answer on this. My alternator is pretty much done for on my 2005 cobalt. 2.2 liter engine. Now, every guide I've checked doesn't deal with 2005, it seems to all be 2008 and up, and the lay out of the engine bay is different. Every guide and how to fluctuates on whether or not you need to remove the passenger wheel to get to the alternator. I do not have the equipment to actually lift the car safely while I'm working on it, and I'm wondering if anyone else has any experience with a 2005 cobalt and could give me a straight answer.

who generally electronics here? >I'm new to electronics, where do I get started? There are several good books and YouTube channels that are commonly recommended for beginners and those wanting to learn more, many with advanced techniques. The best way to get involved in electronics is just to make stuff. Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty. >Links to get started http://pastebin.com/9UgLjyND also, general electronics thread

Help a guy out with a career option crisis. I'm in my 3rd year of Kinesiology studying to be a physiotherapist. And I like what I do, but It's honestly just become mundane to me. It's not bad but its not exciting. I like the idea of helping people. But I'm not exactly proud of the job, you know? Like its not really hard work, you just stand in a nice office all day. I recently started getting into diy stuff as a hobby and doing some small jobs with my carpenter friend and some metal working shit with my engineer friend and holy fuck its all so cool. I mean building things and making things and fucking sparks everywhere and working with molten metal. I respect the people who do trades. They make shit we all need, they work hard and its all physical and demanding. Feels like a job to be proud of. But when I tell either of my friends this, and that I've thought about dropping out to do trade school they tell me its just because its all new to me. That in 5 years id feel the way they do, which is how I feel about Kinesiology. Its just another day sorta thing. And that what I do(will do) is far more valuable and helpful and that at least in 20 years I won't be all beat up and in pain and that it pays better. What do you guys think? I just feel like physio is lame now and these jobs would be so cool. I mean I guess I can still try to do this stuff as a hobby, but I feel like that way I'll always be an amateur.

PLEASE HELP ! ! !

Hey guys, i plan to redo my moms bathroom for a present. I've run into a problem with the window. Its a little larger than most with measurements of 42''x22.5''. all of the windows at my hardware store are on average about 32''x22''. what can i do, or is there somewhere that i can find a find a bathroom window with these dimensions? I'm looking for something that will allow ventilation, so something that opens is preferable. Thanks for the help guys!

Energy storage without batteries.

I recently saw a cool method of storing energy by filling balloons underwater with air. When energy was needed the balloons could allow air out and spin some turbine, I suppose. I'm wondering about storing energy in an end of the world scenario. Batteries would only last so long. I was thinking you could lift weights, and then let them sink. So, ways to store energy? Trying to think of things that could be built relatively easily and could last for a few generations.
