Wood Shelves

Hi fellow /diy/ers. So this weekend I plan on making wood shelves for my mom. It is one of my first attempts in wood working. The shelves will look like the ones in the picture. Using standard 2x4s for the vertical pieces, and attaching a 7/16 plywood board via l-brackets to the 2x4. The shelves will go right on top of a chest freezer, high enough for the freezer to still open. I also plan on building a separate shelve thing right next to the chest freezer with the space I have. Do you guys have any suggestions or tips before I start my project? I also found that they have some nice woods at Home Depot and other building materials such as MDF board and that compressed one. So in the future, I might try to make a better looking shelf. Trying to get some feedback before I start and get past point of no return.

Hey /diy/ I want to start a (not so) little project with this. I'm trying to get more space on my bedroom and this seemed like an awesome idea, plus the large sized bed is gonna be great when my girlfriend comes by. What do you think? Is it posible/affordable?

Aeroponics Thread. Any tips for using aeroponics? Does the micron of the spray nozzle matter that much, if so which spray nozzle is best? How long do I spray the roots for and how is it timed? What improvements should there be to maximize growth?

So /diy/ I'm starting to invest in stocks and such and I was wondering, which is the best or your favorite online site to do this on? I have several thousand dollars currently and just don't want to see any gains I make eaten up in fees and charges.

Question for woodworking guys, i want to make bokken ( wooden sword for practicing kenjutsu ), but the only thing about dimensions thats troubles me is that how this bow on the picture is made. In the middle of the picture you will see caption 0.50 inch bow, so the real question is how to put that information of dimensions into good use without screwing the wood?

'sup /diy/, I plan to sculpt these little "map holders" from Game of Thrones and sell them, but English is not my first language and I need more reference pics. What are these called in English? I have tons of epoxy putty but since these look carved, I think I'll use some toymaker's wax (http://blog.makezine.com/2013/02/05/make-your-own-toy-sculpting-wax/) instead. I don't have access to different types of epoxy so "green stuff" is out of the question.

plug a leaky faucet

2 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: 1364777678871.gif]
hey diy so the story goes like this; I have a leaky tub faucet. I live in a rented home and the land lord is lazy / doesn't really do shit so even though they've known for months nothing's happened. The faucet bothers the fuck out of me [its not like a small drip but a pretty appreciable leak -- kinda like peeing at half strength]. I don't want to fix it myself because its not my property, I don't really know what I'm doing, I might break something, etc. Plus the unit is divided and I don't want to go around asking people if I can shut off the water for a bit and all that shit. Is there an easy way I can plug the stupid thing when I'm not using it?

I want to make a windmill out of mat-board for a window display, but I want it to rotate. How can I do that? I need a motor to rotate I guess but I have no idea where to buy it or which to get or anything. I don't want to spend a fortune. The fans of the windmill will be lightweight, a little thicker than cardstock, so it doesn't have to be too strong. There is an outlet in the window but battery powered is fine too. Thanks

Anyone do any kind of wholesale buying and reselling on eBay? I've been browsing some of those chinese wholesale websites with all the knockoff brand stuff, and it's all pretty cheap. I found a pretty good niche that would be able to make ~$25 profit per sale. Is this a good idea? Do a lot of people do this?

Anyone ever built with earth bags? What did you make? How long did it take you, with how many people? Tips? I'm thinking of doing a backyard shed / somewhere to drink. One electrical outlet, no plumbing.

hey /diy/, I'm growing mung beans, but what I want is to grow the plant short, and have it give off the same amount of seeds, sort of like genetic engineering but through breeding. Any idea how to do this? Pic related, 3 mung beans in a mini test jar

Hey /diy/, just looking for some answers or guidance. I've grown up in a rural area and worked on farms/outdoors for most of my childhood. I always swore I'd leave once college came around and stay in a big city. However, now I'm in college and I've started to realize how much more I like the diy/independent/farming lifestyle. Now that it's summer I'm working on some farms back home because it's fun and giving me some spending money. This has me wanting to live off grid more and more. Just buy some land in the middle of nowhere and have a small home or camper there. Or possibly live on a houseboat/sailbout. For now these are just ideas, but I was wondering how I'd go about carrying them out so I can be self-sufficient and chill w/o having to work behind a desk.

I don't have a better pic at the moment, but I tried directly hooking a type b USB cord to a "motherboard?" because the type b broke off. I believe I put all the right wires to the right connections but I could be wrong. Goes like this: red green black white. . Red . green .black .white (periods being the holes in the board) When I plug it in, my other USB just shuts off. None of the soldering was touching. It looks like it but it wasn't

Miniature fog machine using e-cigs?

15 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: electronic-cigarette-1.jpg]
For cosplay purposes, I needed a really tiny fog machine. I figured that e-cigs would be the best way to do it, as per this video: I picked up four of them up for around 3 bucks a pop, making sure to get the ones where the cartomizer and battery were separable. Having separated them, I now face the issue of power. I was loosely following this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAWZOu7ba_A It claims you can use AA batteries, but either I'm not hooking them up correctly or several of them in series aren't delivering enough juice. How would I be able to make a portable power source for these? The smaller the better. How long do the disposable ones usually run before the coil burns out? Refilling the cartridges isn't a huge issue, but the coils burning out while at a con would be a huge pain in the ass. Lastly, will I be able to simply replace the padding with the nicotine in it, or will I have to run it till its dry?
