So /diy/ I'm starting to invest in stocks and such and I was wondering, which is the best or your favorite online site to do this on? I have several thousand dollars currently and just don't want to see any gains I make eaten up in fees and charges.

Question for woodworking guys, i want to make bokken ( wooden sword for practicing kenjutsu ), but the only thing about dimensions thats troubles me is that how this bow on the picture is made. In the middle of the picture you will see caption 0.50 inch bow, so the real question is how to put that information of dimensions into good use without screwing the wood?

Miniature fog machine using e-cigs?

15 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: electronic-cigarette-1.jpg]
For cosplay purposes, I needed a really tiny fog machine. I figured that e-cigs would be the best way to do it, as per this video: I picked up four of them up for around 3 bucks a pop, making sure to get the ones where the cartomizer and battery were separable. Having separated them, I now face the issue of power. I was loosely following this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAWZOu7ba_A It claims you can use AA batteries, but either I'm not hooking them up correctly or several of them in series aren't delivering enough juice. How would I be able to make a portable power source for these? The smaller the better. How long do the disposable ones usually run before the coil burns out? Refilling the cartridges isn't a huge issue, but the coils burning out while at a con would be a huge pain in the ass. Lastly, will I be able to simply replace the padding with the nicotine in it, or will I have to run it till its dry?

I have an idea that'd make America the most unique country on the planet: Make it a mini-Earth. We'd bring loads of people from around the globe into distinct, separated states that'd replicate mini countries. Multiculturalism exists, but my plan would be a superior form of it - It'd make you feel like you're stepping into different countries...States that'd replicate Mexico,Morocco,Japan, Korea, Germany,Italy,Russia,Ireland,France,Norway. I believe the demographics will generally stay in their own states, too. Look at California, a state that doesn't have a healthy economy and has high unemployment, you’ll see how the Hispanic % of the state is still increasing, not decreasing. In regards to staying loyal to America, look at Hawaii. Hawaii has its own unique culture to it, yet the state is still as American as any other. In regards to the new demographics retaining the state's prior culture, if you again look at Hawaii, you’ll see that the Whites have assimilated nicely into it. Look at Texas, and you'll notice the majority Mexican-Americans are as proud to be Texans as any other demographic Larger states would fit a variety of demographics in them, by being split into different counties and such. California could be a prime candidate for that. There’s a variety of countries that have something similar to that California example, and they function fine, some being Luxembourg, Switzerland, etc. Unlike those countries, everybody in California - along with the rest of the nation - would still learn English in school. There'd be no legal segregation, no forcible removal etc, so people can still live wherever they want to, but once the plan in mostly finalized, I believe they'll mostly stay in their own states. There'll be a variety of hurdles, like how to give people incentive to move from one state to another, how to move people from countries around the world to here, making sure the immigrants have a good, worthwhile background, among other issues.

Is it at all feasible to construct my own electrically powered fridge? It doesn't need to go lower than 10 C (50 F) and I don't care if it has horrible power efficiency compared to any professionally designed fridge. Google didn't turn up much.

I was told you guys might be able to help with my problem. I bought a new multitool and patching kit for my bike, but I don't know how to use the tyre levers that came with it. I'm used to the ones that you can hook onto the spokes, but these ones have holes and I can't figure out why. Can anybody enlighten me?

Note to self and whomever else it may concern: Don't try to smooth out chips in soft glass plates or cups with a torch. Anyway, I haven't seen one in a while, so glassblowing thread.

Hey /diy/ I purchased these lamps from a shop. However the bulbs given are not nearly as powerful as I need them. The only information I have regarding the electrical is that it can handle between 110v to 240v. What size bulb could I possibly buy?

Hey /diy/ I'm thinking of trying out whittling and have been doing some reading on it. What's a good starter knife for beginners like me? From what I've read pretty much any old pocket knife can do, but I was wondering if any stood out amongst the rest. Also, what's a good place to big wood/ sharpening rocks/ other things I may need? I live in NYC and don't really know where I would buy shit like that.

Hey dudes im trying to build a deck in the middle of the bush pic related. Ive hit rock about 100mm in from soil, how would i go about putting footers in the rock or building on it. The site is far from power so power equipment would be hard to use. Could i set stumps of concrete on the rock and then put in footers or is drilling into the rock my only option. Keep in mind this deck is obly 2x2 meters.

Aeroponics Thread. Any tips for using aeroponics? Does the micron of the spray nozzle matter that much, if so which spray nozzle is best? How long do I spray the roots for and how is it timed? What improvements should there be to maximize growth?

'sup /diy/, I plan to sculpt these little "map holders" from Game of Thrones and sell them, but English is not my first language and I need more reference pics. What are these called in English? I have tons of epoxy putty but since these look carved, I think I'll use some toymaker's wax (http://blog.makezine.com/2013/02/05/make-your-own-toy-sculpting-wax/) instead. I don't have access to different types of epoxy so "green stuff" is out of the question.
