How effective is ice for numbing the skin prior to being pierced? I'm not doing this so I can pierce my ear, I have a cyst that needs to be drained and it's a very simple procedure, I'm just scared of the pain. I've read that holding ice to your skin for 7 minutes will make it go numb, so that seems like my best bet. Does anyone have any alternate recommendations?

Using oxyhydrogen to fuel a metal melting furnace

1 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: 2012-09-05 04.04.01.jpg]
I have been looking into making a furnace capable of melting steel or iron and in talking to my uncle he suggested that oxyhydrogen might achieve the temperatures I am looking for. In doing some research I found that oxyhydrogen burns at up to 2800 °C with a pure stoichiomtric mixture, which can be achieved through water eletrolosis. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxyhydrogen The melting point of carbon steel is only ~1500°C and iron is ~1100-1600°C depending on type of iron. http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/melting-temperature-metals-d_860.html I found plans to generate it, and I know how to store it so that part is not a problem. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaGUEUxGKzE&feature=related I have been unable to find where anyone has made a furnace out of it though, which leads to some questions. What type of furnace would be best for something like this? The article on oxyhydrogen mentions that it has a oxidizing flame when in proportions to get maximum efficiency, would this be a problem with melting metal? What type of refractory material would be able to withstand temperatures taht high? How would one go about controlling the temp in the furnace? Could I use a simple valve on the gas input to limit fuel? Any help would be greatly appreciated. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxyhydrogen Burns at up to 2800 degrees celsius I found plans to generate it, and I know how to store it so that part is not a problem. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaGUEUxGKzE&feature=related I have been unable to find where anyone has made a furnace out of it though

Hey, /diy/hards! My girlfriend is inheriting a fixer-upper, and I'm going to do the fixing. There's only one small problem that I'm not sure about fixing... One of the load-bearing walls is in a very inconvenient place, and I want to replace it with a structural beam. This wouldn't usually mystify me, except it abuts the exterior wall which is made of cinder block, and the area near that corner is too cramped to put a column against the cinder blocks. I've concluded that I need to somehow anchor the beam directly into to cinder blocks. What is the correct way of doing this? Google has failed me. I'm picturing cutting halfway into the blocks to place the beam into the wall. Would this be right?

Hey guys its been a while whats up. Ok I have a fairly ridiculous idea for a weapon I've been conjuring up in my head lately... so i supposed I would ask you guys how a poorfag like myself could make this device. I want to build a knife that can work as a taser. I'll expand the idea after I get the preliminaries.

So I heard you guys had great ideas for nomadic living. What tips can you share with an 18 year old who wants to just GO? You can call me a hippy or whatever. I have 4-5k to my name, and I just want to 'do it myself' for once.

So... My boss has decided we need an engraving machine. I've never used one before and while we don't need one, i'm agreeing because I intend to abuse it and engrave the shit out of everything I can get my hands on. Budgets on the low end ~£1500 Does anyone have any experience with engravers? Also LASERS! vs a CNC cutting head.

Hey, /diy/. I haven't been on here much since the board first started, but I've had an idea and I want to see if anyone here can give some ideas on where to start with it. I want to make a mechanical computer. Now stick with me here. I don't want to make a full blown computer, just something that emulates Brainfuck. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brainfuck ) Unfortunately, I'm a software person and haven't worked much with machinery like this. I've figured a few things out about the design so far. I'd like there to be a body and two circles around the body (one a few inches above the other). One of these circles would serve as the tape for instructions. Basically, each circle would be divided in 256 or so cells that can be used to represent numbers. Tldr; Resources on designing straight gear-based machinery or ideas on creating a simple mechanical computer based on brainfuck.

I' gonna make an electromagnet with a laminated core. Is there a way to predict how many turns of wire should I use? If it matters, I want it to be able to switch polarity rapidly.

Hi diyers! Does anybody knows how to make things like that. This example is with mountain dew, baking soda and oxigen peoxide(h2o2): There are also more ways, like UV light and marker ink. I haven't got access to mountain dew in my country, what can I use to make a glowing liquid?

So, I'm sure this question has been asked thousands of times on here, but fuck it; can a drill press be used for light milling applications? I mean, it seems as if the general consensus is "yeah but it's a bad idea", but I mean, at the most I'll be milling sheet metal or aluminum. My buddy is selling an old CM drill press for 75 bucks; works just fine, and seems to be FAR better construction than the plastic sheet you see nowadays. 12 speed, 3200 rpm. I think it's definitely got the power to handle light milling applications, but I know a lot of people say the drill bearings aren't meant to handle side load. Is it really that big of an issue? It would just be far cheaper for me in the long run to spend 75 bucks on a drill press and maybe like 100 on a cheap x-y table, than to spend 500 in a weak-ass shitty mini mill or several thousand for a high-end mill (when all I'm going to be doing is some light hobbyist work). Pic semi related.

/diy/nosaurs, i try to stay the hell away from /fa/ and I cant think of where else to put this. how about a crochet thread up in here? you can find patterns for anything on Ravelry, but what about trying to figure out a pattern without paying for it? namely http://www.etsy.com/listing/109130316/crochet-pattern-fire-blanket this one. looks to me like its worked in the back loops in a spiral, as separates and then joined with a slip stitch or maybe just sewn together. that way you can use the ombre yarn and sort the peices by the colors.
