Hair Dryer Duty Cycle

6 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: DSCN0852a.jpg]
I'm doing some tests with a hair dryer and thermostat to heat an airspace. I know the duty cycle for a hair dryer may be low, but I also know you can run most for 10 minutes on high without a problem (100% duty cycle). What I want to do is keep the air space at 60F or higher. I know that 1 hair dryer won't fit the bill, but it will help me gauge what I will need. Other than the thermostat (used for baseboard electric heaters), I'll be using all salvaged and secondhand parts. I've already built the test unit, as you see in these images. It goes into a 16'x4'x3.5' polytunnel containing vegetable plants. I've run short tests, outside the tunnel, with what I've already slapped together and it seems to work rather well. My only real concern is the amount of humidity inside the tunnel. The test unit is plugged into a GFCI outlet, though, since there's no ground in a hair dryer, I doubt it'd trip if there was a short. The extra thermostat came from a nearly decade old project. So, I haven't expended any money on this project yet. I have several types of heating elements and fans at my disposal and I may come up with something better later on. I'd like to make a vent pipe with holes in it to direct the air flow down the entire length of the tunnel. Any constructive input would be appreciated.

I installed some window insulation film for my window. The problem is that it has some wrinkles because I didn't apply it properly, apparently blowing it with a hairdryer will solve the problem and shrink it, but is there any difference other than aesthetics by doing this? The layer of air is trapped anyway with or without wrinkles?

Is this a shitty tool set or would it be worth it for $20? Purpose would be acting as basic tool set for first time apartment. http://www.walmart.com/ip/119-Piece-Home-Use-Tool-Set/29096381

So, I bought this - http://www.bioennopower.com/pages/12v-9ah-lifepo4-battery I`m going on a hike for 1 week and I need to charge my camera and phone. Phone is not all that important but the camera is. I took apart a cheapo 12volt-to-USB car charger and made it work with the battery. What I don`t know is, how many charges I get from that one battery if my camera battery says 5.3v and 1300mah

Multi -copter thread!

Multi -copter thread! (I opened this thread earlier today, but I had to ge to work. Sorry for that.) Building my own Octo -copter with these specs: Frame: Streak 1000 Rotors: x8 Team BlackSheep 750kV Propellers: x8 APC Propeller 14x4" FPV mount: Alware Advanced 3-axises Camera: Canon 550D FPV Monitor: FatShark video goggles, or Samsung 55" monitor. Microcontroller: MultiWii PRO 2.0 Flight Controller w/MTK GPS Module Betteries: 4x 11,1v 12 000mAh from MaxAmps.com Parachute-Emergancy-System: Mars 120 form Marsparachutes.com If you want to build your own: Tutorial: http://blog.oscarliang.net/build-a-quadcopter-beginners-tutorial-1/ For a list of what the microcontroller includes, or for what you should use, here is a list; http://robot-kingdom.com/best-flight-controller-for-quadcopter-and-multicopter/ Eventual problems: If I loose signal and loose the drone? No problem. The microcontroller have a Return-Home function, so it will come back to the exact coordinates I have programmed as "home" if connection is lost. If it gets a malfunction while flying on high altitude? No problem either, with the Mars 120 parachute it deploys a 120" parachute if fast altitude-drop. Oh, and also; I control the Octo -copter from my computer. I use a PCTx RCcontroller-to-PC connection port. Allows me to use my Hotas Warthhog Flightstick. http://www.thrustmaster.com/products/hotas-warthog-flight-stick Tell me about your setup /diy/. Or if you would like one, how would you build it, and why? I also have a question; Does anyone have any suggestions to good RC controllers? It needs to include some programmable buttons, since I need to connect a servo to one of them, to click the take-picture button on the 550D. The drone will be used for long-range flights and aerial-photography.

I'm considering building a misting system for one of my vivariums. My goal is to build it for less than 50 euros. I was planning on using a cheap air pump connected to a water container and through pressure pump the water out through a small small hose with a misting adapter connected to it. The pump would be something like pic related. Question is: will this work and is there a better solution?

Hey /diy/, I read some stuff about cheap vodka filtering and how its taste can improve after a few filtrations. Apparently a simple Brita filter can be used several times to do this. My question is what would be a good way to set up a homemade filtration system, without buying a Brita filter? Pic inrelated

How to make your own Ghillie suit

Someone invited me over for a paintball/airsoft tournament and I want to practically create my own camouflaged ghillie suit to better conceal me. Do you guys have any tips or how to do manuals on how to make your own? I could just buy my own but I'm a cheap fag and I don't think spending $70-$100 in a one time event is practical.

Cockroaches

My apartment has a lot of cockroaches and Ive been using diatomaceous earth, spraying it in the kitchen, to try to get rid of them. I called the apartment office and they will have someone come and spray soon. However I have had them before, even after spraying, they just reappear. How do I get rid of them and keep them from coming back? I feel bad that it may be my fault as I dont clean much though I do take the garbage out on a regular basis. I'm thinking the dust, and unwashed or unvaccumed floor may attract them. (especially since I eat at the computer or on the couch. Help?

Hi there /diy/. I'm renting a house with a few other roommates right now. We're all college students and we hold shows at our house regularly for local and touring bands. We've never had a problem with neighbors complaining about noise, but nevertheless I'm looking for ways to make my living room more soundproof so our shows can go later than 10 pm, after which amplified music is grounds for a noise complaint. I've looked up a few guides on the Internet and some of them are feasible but I wanted to see if you all had any ideas. Today I salvaged a few really big rolls of thick carpet. I'm thinking of cutting them into panels and hanging them at regular intervals along the walls. Thoughts? Any better ideas?

Does anyone here have experience owning or managing rental property? Is the rental business worth getting into if you commit to it full time (doing most work yourself)?

So my brother is moving out, and he's getting rid of his sony TC-136SD. He got it for like $10 aus and it never worked for him. Basically when you turn it on, the VU meters max out and rattle heaps. The only audio to come out is a strong fuzz. With a tape in the machine, the fuzz changes a little, but you cant hear the tape at all. Any ideas as to what the problem could be?/ Where do I start? I've never really worked with audio equipment before. It's a nice machine and I don't want it to go to waste
