Where would I buy a flux pen? I need to solder a new DC jack onto my laptop and I feel like liquid flux would be too messy. I can only find them online.

liquid flux is a goo. its not runny. you dont need flux paste/pen though. just use flux core solder and use a low wattage iron/temp controlled not a 60w iron

I have a 35w, pic related. Does that work?

Mine is liquid.
But yeah, solder's flux should be more than enough for DC jack soldering.

I see...
mine is inferior quality. I also just use inferior quality solder paste for everything now. costs like 3$ on ebay and works well for everything.

yea, you may even wish it wasn't quite so hot
i have a cheapo that switches between 30 and 15 watts,,,, and the 30 is hotter than Id like but the 15 is too cool

It won't destroy any connections though, right?

You can do this with a cheap radioslut soldering iron. Mine's like 25W, and a spool of rosin core solder. It's not that hard or expensive. Why are you using paste with an iron? It's meant to be laid on by a SMT machine and run through an oven.

I'm not using paste? Every guide I've seen says to use a flux pen, which I'm assuming is basically liquid flux in a pen.

If you just find yourself really overheating the lugs on the jack to get the solder to wet, flux might make your life easier, but it's not really necessary if you can just work fast and control the heat. Lugs are easy to solder.

Sorry, I failed at following the thread. This other guy was using paste, probably for something more practical.

So could I just use regular rosin core as opposed to a rosin flux and the solder? Are they similar? I probably should have looked up the mechanics of solder before making this thread but will rosin core wet to the motherboard and not come lose?
