I'm having trouble finding documentation over it, so I have come to /g/ for help: The IRC protocol and servers is amongst the most widely used chat system in the internet, and so the way you can attack is important. Here is the question: how exactly does the protocol work? Would it be possible to, say, hack into an IRC server which you know the address for and log all communications in it without actually appearing as part of the conversation? What is it even that the IRC and the servers do to prevent it from getting attacked? I have search a bit but haven't found anything to answer these questions, so direct answers of documents describing the workings of IRC would be good.

Every day I come to /g/ and read posts about how debian netinst is such a great learning experience. How it'll help me learn about my computer, linux, and ultimately myself. Unfortunately the only thing I have learned is that I don't know shit about computers, and that I'm not the kind of person that'd learn to swim by swan diving from a plane into the middle of the ocean. I've installed ubuntu on several occasions, but I never learned anything from those experiences. There are numerous guides that tell you to apt-get this and copy-paste that, but if you ask why x command does something, they tell you to go read the "man pages" in the terminal. Where are you supposed to learn what "eth0" is? or why your hard drive is called "sda"? Or why you should apt-get x before you apt-get y? or learn to write your own commands without having to look them up online? I can see that there is logic behind the madness, and it frustrates me to no end that there seems to be an endless supply of guides for specific tasks yet not nearly as many guides for those interested in learning how linux actually works. pic unrelated, it's the information on my pc I compiled when I was trying to follow the debian installation guide

Soundcards

Generally how long does /g/ keep a soundcard? Do you usually upgrade it as often as a videocard? Motherboard? I'm wondering about the practicalities of buying a high end sound card from 2007 on the cheap versus a current pci-e soundcard. Thanks in advance for any advice/anecdotes in advance.
