What are you working on /g/ and 4chan?
It doesn't break any rules, deal with it

Last thread went pretty well, so I'll start another.
GNU/Linux, BSD, Solaris, Plan 9 etc. welcome, Macfags tolerated and Winfags unwelcome.
Feel free to answer none or all of the following questions:
What distro are you using?
What do you recommend for new linux users? Experienced users? Programmers? Enthusiasts?
What update/release/new distro are you looking forward to?
What do you want to try?
Q: I'm a windows babby, what distro should I use?
A: Linux mint, xubuntu, openSUSE, Fedora and *maybe* crunchbang, if you like the aesthetic.
Q: I've been using a training wheels distro for a while, what is a good distro to help me learn about linux?
A: Try arch, minimal debian/ubuntu, slackware and if you're feeling adventurous, try BSD or install gentoo (or funtoo).
Q: What is the best distro?
A: There is no "best" distro. Some are better for certain situations. When asking questions like this, remember to be specific, that all distros can be modified in virtually every way, and that all gnu/linux distros are fairly similar beyond DE's, package managers and philosophies.

hey /g/, doing complete format reinstall and wanted to get some views
currently using Windows 8/Linux Mint dual boot, Windows is for work (I work from home as a U-Haul CSR). I can get Windows 7 or 8 free, so $$ isn't a problem (Microsoft DreamSpark), but I'm trying to choose whether or not I should go back to 7 or stay with 8 and upgrade to 8.1.
From my personal experience, I haven't noticed much of a difference between Windows 7 and Windows 8, other than 8's faster boot times and overall more smooth feel than Windows 7. I tried upgrading to 8.1 during the beta but it fucked everything I had up, so I had to redo everything - is the released 8.1 any good?
Build a router

I want a dedicated machine with low TDP and kWh, that is capable of routing with high level of protection from unauthorized connections, ad blocking, torrents handling, NAS and i2p. Probably I'll need m own srver in the nearest future.
Since I didn't find any prebuild models that can satisfy all my needs, I thought that macing my own minicomputer with linux or *bsd can be a good Idea.
Suggest me good components for such a use, /g/
