warning: If you max up brightness to cure the pwm flicker, make sure to turn down white/gamma* levels in drivers and maybe try sun glasses...) (previously I thought LED's might be better, but that was because I believed they could achieve dimming without PWM but it appears this has not happened) In short, they are problematic to dim and without dimming they are so bright you may need sun glasses to read black on white... http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1528230&page=2 The electronic ballasts in CCFL backlights may run at 40,000Hz or so, but the PWM used for dimming only runs at about 175Hz and is visible to some people. I've tested several displays using a photoresistor and all cycle between 175 and 220Hz. LED backlights can be dimmed by adjusting their current, but this is usually not done for bright backlight LEDs because this can cause color shifts and other problems. This leaves PWM as the only real means of dimming the display, and appears to work at the same frequency as CCFLs (though I have not measured it directly). Effects from a small duty cycle can be worse with LEDs because they do not continue to glow for several milliseconds like CCFLs when switched off.

hey /g/, just installed rutorrent on my ubuntu server using this script: http://pastebin.com/rV6Q7WiR Now i'm having trouble running apache2, i get the error: (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address no listening sockets available, shutting down I've tried about 20+ links of google, with all similar solutions (find and kill what's using port 80) but it isn't working for me. When i try one of the many commands to see what's running port 80 I get nothing. Can /g/ help?

Im trying to find a way to text with my friend whiles hes schooling in canada. I tried Google Voice, but realized he would be texting a US number, and he gets charged for that. Im not really sure where to go with that, and most of the apps that say you can text canada for free seem sketchy. Any suggestions for ways to work around this stupid barrier would be appreciated.

So friend just had a possible malware encounter on SendSpace. Nothing happened but my friend was alerted when his download looked shady as fuck. SendSpace might have replaced download file with another. My friend recently went to download a file from SendSpace. The file had the same filename (somethingorother.rar) with EXE tacked on the end. He asked me, I thought it might have been a self-extracting archive and told him to save without the .exe extension and extract using WinRAR to be safe. We both have all file extensions visible. The downloaded file ended up only being a few hundred kb and wouldn't extract. Renaming to exe, the file required admin rights (visible by the icon, we didn't run it). It still wasn't detected by MSE. Normally I'd be thinking "this asshole uploader is trying to infect us" but upon going back to the exact link, the filename no longer had an .exe on the end of it and it downloaded normally. That is why this shit is weird. Uploaded it to VT. https://www.virustotal.com/file/dd593fd26fce136f298d55519a9bc8cb9aee5092fd6b1ebd18bfa090e91c328b/ana lysis/1349188862/ ignore the filename, just some porn the faggot wanted. Has anybody encountered this?

I installed Crunchbox as my FIRST Linux OS. Where can I read/learn how to use this OS? The wiki on their site is confusing & unorganized. I can't find documentation either. & where can I read on how to make my desktop look like this? I want to change the font to the one in the picture too.

Tablet Troubleshooting

I would have posted this on /ic/ but then I remember that they hate tablet threads like poison and refer everyone here. So, I'm pretty sure I have the latest driver. But the closer my tablet is to my laptop the more the pen spazzes out. It's a huge problem because I feel comfortable with the tablet on top of the keyboard, but since the pen is so horribly seizureiific I can't draw for shit. I don't know if it's interference or what. It's a Bamboo Tablet thats a few years old, but as far as I know there is only a few scratches. Any help?

So /g/ i found this second hand macintosh laptop. It's about 20$ and it's very old. It's a Apple Macintosh Power Book 145b, from 1991 i think. I don't use apple products and i never used apple products. Is 20$ a good price ? I want to sell it for more to an apple fanboy. What do you think ?

The Venus Project is a cult that wants to get rid of money and have a resource economy instead. This is an email exchange I had with them. The Venus Project Tours Inbox x blah(atski)blah.com Aug 21 to tvp I am interested. Can I give you $200 worth of resources you might need? The journey begins with one step, after all. tvp(atski)thevenusproject.com tvp(atski)thevenusproject.com Aug 22 to me I'm sorry we don't understand what you are asking blah(atski)blah.com Aug 22 to tvp You charge $200 per tour. I would like to give you whatever resources you need (food, plywood, USB drives, batteries, etc.) instead of money. Send me a shopping list for $200 and I'll buy the stuff you requested, bring it to you in return for the tour and the DVDs and pamphlets. tvp(atski)thevenusproject.com tvp(atski)thevenusproject.com Aug 23 to me We don't really do it that way, would be more troublesome. Let us know what is feasible if the usual 200 fee is not. best, Joel blah(atski)blah.com Aug 23 to tvp Don't you think we should start building a resource-based economy right now? You're obviously planning your resource needs, so I'm willing to help you with that. Think globally, act locally and all that? tvp(atski)thevenusproject.com tvp(atski)thevenusproject.com Aug 23 to me If you want to attend a tour session with Jacque please let us know what you can afford, we do not do it that way. We also need to have the following information in advance for us to schedule you: >info dump here

>But in terms of running coreboot, well, the machine which you run coreboot on are Intel-type machines. Now, there are a couple of… there is a problem, and that is, a lot of the Intel — and also AMD — CPUs require a microcode blob, and coreboot has these microcode blobs, which is the same kind of problem as firmware blobs in Linux. So, what we really need to do is make coreboot libre, just as we make Linux libre (which doesn’t have the blobs), keep (?) the coreboot libre (which doesn’t have the blobs) and then we need to see which processors actually run adequately without any microcode blob. And we’re looking for somebody who wants to lead this project ’cause it takes work. Now, leading this project doesn’t mean that you personally get all these kinds of hardware; oh, no, it would be asking the whole community to test things, but somebody has got to ask the community to do it, spread the word, receive the responses, put them together, and publish the list. Would (?) he like to do that? If he is really interested in having the answer to this question, maybe he’d like to help get the answer, and that would help the whole community. ~Stallman This just in, Coreboot isn't free.
