Move windows xp to smaller partition

[TL;DR] How would I backup my Windows XP image (currently 46 GB), format its partition, create a smaller one, and then recover it to this new partition?
When I built my computer I threw a 1TB hard drive in and only had Windows XP at the time. I later got Windows 7 and used its rudimentary partitioning tool to partition the drive exactly in half: one half for Windows XP and the other for Windows 7.
After a few months of using it I realize that I almost never (but sometimes do) need the Windows XP partition and decide to shrink its partition and add the space to my Windows 7 partition. For some reason, the partition is fragmented as fuck and I only gain back about half of the space after defragging and shrinking the Windows XP partition as much as I knew how.
Now, I think the only way to recover the rest of the space is to backup the current installation to an image on an external drive, delete the partition, and create a new partition for Windows XP with somewhere around 80 GB of space.
How would I go about doing this?
