I have a K95 and I really like it, but it takes up so much fucking room on my desk and I don't use the macro keys at all. What would be a good tenkeyless alternative, preferably something with media keys? I just want red switches and preferably red backlighting, but I don't really care about that. So far I've looked at the CM keyboards and they seem to be decent budget keyboards.
Where would be the best place to sell this K95? I also have a K60 that's been sitting in the closet forever I want to get rid of.

I don't know if I should post this in /sqt/ but it is about mechs so I figure you guys may be able to help me out.

I'm planning on maybe trying to find an old ass Model M or something similar. Like a keyboard from the 90's. And I want to jury rig the shit out of it so that it's USB connection, no key rollover, maybe enhance the polling rates and stuff of the like.

First off, how difficult would it be just to get the base thing running properly?
Secondly, how hard would it be to make those kinds of modifications to it? I've never worked on keyboards before but I figure if I mess up, it's like 20 dollars down the drain at most.
Any micro controllers y'all would recommend?

Well, not with a model m. It uses a membrane.

You could take apart an old keyboard and build a new one which would then be capable of NKRO which is what I'm currently doing, but I think you'll have trouble turning an old keyboard into something that's capable of NKRO just like that.

Unless you find a way to make diodes as flat as the sheet, in which case you'd probably be eligible for a prize of some sort.

I've got some cream alps right here. They're nice but I still prefer my Topre. I don't know about other alps, but I'm constantly on the lookout for vintage keyboards so hopefully I'll find some eventually.

I'd love to try out buckling springs, but I wouldn't know where to get my hands on those given that I'm in the middle of europe. That, and I've fallen in love with the 60% form factor and I also live with other people who would probably have trouble sleeping to the sound of me loudly shitposting. A buckling spring keyboard is on my list of keyboards to still acquire though.

I've got the fullsize version of that apple keyboard, it's nice. One thing you can do with it is mod the switches yourself to make them work similar to other varieties of alps.

Buckling springs are loud but not loud enough to travel through walls, so they're fine provided you're in a different room. If you can't find a Kishsaver or a space saver, then the m13 may satiate your 60% needs. It's big as fuck, but it's got a trackpoint so you don't need to move your hands to the mouse as much.

You're probably far from end game, friend.

I'm not doubtful of that statement, but until I find something which can replace the keyboard I'm typing on right now on my desk I'll consider this endgame.

And yeah, I saw some of the alps modding that one can do though I still haven't managed to actually make them clicky. How the hell am I supposed to put the leaf back inside if I bent them outwards and they're colliding with the walls of the switch housing?

I'd say so. It's somewhere between my t60 and x220 in terms of resistance, but scissor switch has high variance so it's hard to compare.

The only thing is it has the high resistance of a scissor switch, but you've got to push it longer because of the travel distance. Blacks were my first switches, and to be honest at first I thought they were too stiff. But, after a week or so I lovedddddddddddd the resistance level and now I hate any lighter switches. You just can't not bottom out on reds, but it's very easy to type without bottoming out on blacks.

I think the mkg threads are so shitty because there are more kids and teenagers on 4chan than adults.

Mechanical keyboards are really a hobby for well-to-do adults seeing as a board typically runs $100 minimum and cap sets can go from $25 all the way up to a couple hundred.

No kid is gonna get their parents to start dropping that money once they see it's just for "another keyboard" and pieces of plastic.

I'm going to build a custom board out of my old keyboard so I already have switches and most of the caps I need. Some caps will have the wrong labels but oh well. Some key switches don't work and I have not yet taken the keyboard apart to diagnose so I'll have between eight and eleven extra switches to use. Is there anything I should add? Please note that since I'm reusing a lot of parts, I can't modify the layout too much as I would need to source different keycaps and because of that, I'd like to stick to as much of a standard layout as I can.

What would be a better alternative to mx blues. I like these keys, but they don't seem bouncy enough.
When I hit a key twice consecutively, I often hit it before it has time to rebound all the way and I end up bottoming it out. It's kind of annoying and it slows me down quite a bit.

Greens and blue are all shit for double tapping. If you want a quick recovery blue switch then the only alternative is Topre. It basically gives you the tactility without the 10 years of recovery time. I used to use blues as well and am really happy about having switched. There is not Cherry switch that gets rid of that problem. Only thing you could do is go for linear switches like Reds or Blacks, but they are trash for typing so theres that. Have never tried Buckling Springs though, so maybe thats another alternative, I wouldnt know.

I use Gat Browns with 65g springs and 62g Zealios, they're both buttery smooth and the tactile bump is crisp and distinct. You'll notice an immediate difference if you compare them to something like Cherry Clears, which immediately feel much more gritty in comparison.

Rather than having it attached to your keyboard, buy something like the Griffin PowerMate, or the VMeter. Even a USB Rotary Knob would work.

I get the idea of Massdrop, but hate the site. You have to register to even view something, brilliant. Discounts aren't much if at all and everything takes months. Some small custom jobs, I could see, but if it's something anyone can buy cheaper elsewhere, why bother?

Anyone ever tried clear switches with different springs?
I don't like stock clears, ergo clears (MX-Brown spring) are too light and pandas (MX-Black spring) are too heavy.
How do 55/58.5/60/62/67g springs compare? Also, how are the lubed switches from GON? They are pretty pricey, but I think it would be more expensive to get the different krytox oils in Germany.
I'm also thinking about Zealios, but they are pretty pricey as well and I'd have to lube them myself. Are they actually (way) better than Cherry Clears?

I have 65g Zealios and the weight is baby bear's porridge. It's noticeably heavier than browns, but not as heavy as clears. Plus, the tactility is better than clears. You don't need to lube them, either - the smoother stem makes them far less gritty than Cherry's thirty-year-old shit.

Yes. Clears are somewhat heavier than blues, which are slightly heavier than browns.

Well thanks for this impression, I guess I'll have to go with the chink knock offs, even if it pains my german heart.
Anyone knows if the springs sold by Zeal are the same inside the switch? I'd really like to experiment a little, but buying ~100 switches each would be quite expensive.
What would be a good switch lube? The stuff from Zeal seems ridiculously overpriced, especially the spring lube. Are there some good internationally shipping alternatives?

They must be. The Zealio springs are gold-plated too, and they're both Korean rated. That said, shit's all sold out in the sub-100cN range. Not to say you can't buy aftermarket springs elsewhere.

The Magicforce on Massdrop seems like a good price, but how good are the Gateron switches? Are Gateron Reds good for gaming? typing?

So your choices are
A) Don't buy a keyboard for the volume knob
B) Buy a quality keyboard and a separate quality volume knob, cheap or expensive, the choice is yours
or C) Buy the Das keyboard with the knob.

Das are more or less overpriced and the quality's gone down over the years. The original Das boards were great quality and had a good reputation for being customer-friendly (Any issues occurred, they'll fix it, they'd often upgrade the customer's shipping for no apparent reason, they would fix any of their keyboards regardless of whether or not it was bought from Das, or even who broke the keyboard.)
Now they're none of the above. Their keyboards had a sharp decline in quality around the 3rd line of keyboards when they started using Greetech switches and everything that was seemingly 'good' about the company+product disappeared as well.

Basically, they were known as a decent product from a fine company. Now they're an overpriced product from a 'meh' company that likes to cut-corners on their keyboards. I don't know why they changed so drastically, but their boards really aren't of the same quality as before.

So, if you really want a volume knob, that griffin is what most people would go for. If it's too expensive for you, buy a cheaper one. You can get a USB rotary knob for next to nothing.

Reds are great for FPS games, they make movement related tasks much more convenient.

They're not that good for typing. Not at all. Really easy to hit the wrong key if you have big fingers.
