Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

>>
Anonymous 2016-01-23 01:31:45 No.52570011
>>52569982
If you only use your laptop in dark environments, a glossy screen can be nice because the blacks will be slightly deeper. If you use your laptop in light environments, you're going to want the matte screen because it will reflect A LOT less light than the glossy screen and therefore reduce glare significantly.

Well, the X201 supports more RAM, and its CPU is a tad faster, and maybe you get like 15 minutes more battery life.

But you get quite a few downgrades:
Keyboard
Screen
built quality
looks worse

so unless you need 8GB of RAM instead of 4, but no real CPU upgrade, dont do it.

Paid $900 to get an IPS model, but had to use 4GB RAM and 128GB SSD.
SSDs can be bought under $100

Sold it used for $670 after upgrading to 256GB SSD.

Honestly I didn't think RAM was a big issue, its underclocked processor sucked.

Pretty straightforward unless you have an X series tablet (L and E do vary, check HMM)
You'll have to remove the keyboard and bezels around them.
Maybe remove one LCD hinge for it to be easy.
Just get the proper fan by checking your FRU.

I can agree that I partially do this. I like how linux feels. I like feeling like I am in a productive environment and want to be (learn'ed?). I spend a lot of time drinking coffee/rb/tea to keep up with night studies and day work. Linux has become a little more stable than W10. Sometimes I need windows to interface windows. It is then viable. I found GNU-Linux gnome via cygwin to be exceedingly reasonable and an awesome environment so much to make it my main OS, well, at least linux mint.
>>52570735
perhaps this guy isn't well versed in linux. Your time is money and pay for what you can't deal with hense windows or mac. Linux if you have a quick second to quickly find your answer.

I realized while looking at macbooks that these systems with mac are embedded meaning it is like investing in a car. When it is dead it is dead. While the macbook is appealing in weight and backlit, the OS and embedded components don't seem manageable or affordable LT. Thinkpad is bigger but modular which is a trade off. Meaning if my battery kicks out I replace it as am used to. I don't want to carry around something that is over 3lbs however when going to a coffee shop to socialize or try to casually network. This seems tedious.

my overall analysis is make a variable that is what you consider the laptop weight (for anyone going through this same struggle). What does it mentally cost you to have to deal with weight? $0? $200? $300?+ Then performance as it can dwindle when using some of the low end shit. Make a formula then set it equal to a budget and factor in time.

On an unrelated note, apple seems to have it in tight with adobe. I fucking hate adobe and use a browser that won't even let adobe load without bitching 3x ways to Sunday. Fuck adobe. Use java's API for animation instead if viable in context.
side note: thinkpad's fan in t410 are easily accessbi
>>bitching

I gave mine stickers and used it to learn html and started coding a site. Its change page left, right buttons are great in Notepad++ to quickly view notes/code and compare. Just got a x201, its a great little laptop for programming, basic games, and other normal computer shit. But how do people use these things as their fucking daily driver, I mean if you had a newer one with Nvidia graphics, maybe. But something feels wrong about not being able to easily upgrade more than just the Memory, HDD, and battery. Although that's more a laptop thing than anything. Still, this feels better than any other laptop I've ever used, if not a little under powered due to only first gen i5 and Intel graphics. Even if you're not a gamer, many people here that aren't neetfags (if those who aren't exist on this board) do some type of hardware intensive work like CAD or Animation.

If you need to do hardware intensive work, you do it on a proper workstation. If you need to do hardware intensive work on a mobile platform, you get a stronger laptop. For work that's not hardware intensive, a machine like your X201 or even my X200 work out just fine. Honestly, I'm not clear on what the issue here is.
