>Is there a 2012 headphone guide?

Pic related.

>Or should I just get dem ATH-M50's

No. MDR-V6 are more neutral, more comfortable, and have better build quality for less than half the cost.

The only reason ATH-M50s became flavor of the month here in the first place was heavy viral advertising, like, blatant viral copypasta you could google and find on forums and amazon.

M50s seem to have everything I'm looking for though. They have decent bass, are closed, and have decent quality. Would you still recommend the mdr?

Not wanting to start another thread... I got the ATH-M50s but it has almost non-existent bass. Is that normal?

The reason Ive been thinking about them is I tried them on time ago and they felt pretty nice and would've bought there an then - before all the hype - but was poorfag cause uni. oh well

Thanks man, if only they werent so ugly (I hate to say it and come across like a materialistic cunt, but hey, its true).

The Grado seem nice - of only they were closed back

Probably end up with the MDR-V6 anyway though, if nobody can suggest anything better?

The best brands are Stax, Ultrasone and Beyerdynamic. Those are made in places like Germany and Japan, but they can go higher than $100.

My M50's plastic and shit starts breaking and falling off after 1 year. That metal right around the thing is just a distraction. Really, that AT line is shit.

Anyway, they are not made with Chinese crap that AT and AKG uses. AKG used to be good when they manufactured in Australia, but now they started working with the Chinks.

I really dislike this new autoreply stuff...

>The only reason ATH-M50s became flavor of the month here in the first place was heavy viral advertising, like, blatant viral copypasta you could google and find on forums and amazon.

God damn it. While Viral bullshits goes on the M50's have been talked about for fucking ages. Tons of headphone/hi-fi forums recommended them before 'viral marketing' was even a known thing. I'm sorry but word of mouth advertising != viral advertising. The fact the internet's mouth moves so fast blurs a lot. While some viral advertising may have been spotted as of late, the M50's reputation weren't built on it.

'flavor of the month' is a bullshit claim.

Headphones are talked about more often since they're a current trend(Electronic music[wubstep & DeeJaying] & Dr.Dre). Not only are there more headphones on the market now but more people spewing bullshit reviews.

Thus returns to the old and known classic(MDR-V6's).

I like my M50's better than my V6's personally. I got my M50's for the same price as my V6s(which I sold). Though the M50 price hike that happened in the last 1-2~ years does justify looking for alternatives(V6, SRH440 or SR80)

the SRH440 look alright actually.
But being an Ausfag - the ATH-50 are only 20 more than SRH440 and 10 more than the V6
So price difference doesnt factor it.

Do Grado make a decent, cheap closed back?

If you want "good bass", closed, and decent quality, spend $20 more than the ATH-M50s and get the Beyerdynamic DT770s (80 ohms if you lack an amp). They're the most comfortable headphones you'll ever wear (comfort being a strong weakness of the M50s), tons of bass (but not nigrabass) and an all metal frame, so they're difficult to break.

I really don't get the 'comfort' issues with M50's.

I have a massive head. My work hard hat is one click from the largest size.

Asides from getting hot after hours and hours of use and the pads wearing down(not uncomfortable really) I have no complaints.

Though asides from that I agree with this poster.

...is your head abnormally numb or something?

Most people find the M50s clamp entirely too hard and cause a headache in about 30-60 minutes of wear.

Anonymous 2012-09-12 05:57:58 No.27543985
>>27543878

That really depends.

Do you even know about the dull purple and gray Velour ones? I bet those are generally better than the black Pleather. Pleather is useless compared to the real thing. It's just uncomfortable and fractures happen easily.

>They look slightly out of budget though

Save up a little more then. They're worth it for the comfort alone.

The large, completely circumaural velour earpads are amazingly soft and pillow-like. They do not touch your ears at all, they simply rest on your head around your ears. The effect this has on comfort is dramatic. You could wear them for days comfortably.

>Save up a little more then
Its not an issue in that sense, I avoid paying that much as I'll likely break them in a year or so anyway. I could get em though

Is the comfort REALLY that much better?
And are they portable? They'll get most use on public transport

Anonymous 2012-09-12 06:09:09 No.27544129
You have to understand, OP. The popularity of the ATH-M50s was mainly due to it's price. They are a great set of headphones with good bass and a pretty neutral sound, but the main selling point of them was that they were $100 headphones at the time that were selling for quite a bit less.

They've gone up a lot since they got popular so you might not find a good deal on them. Look into some of the other recommendations in this thread. I love my M50s but I'd get something else to replace them with if these ever broke.

Well most other recommendations are (excluding grado) AUD 110-250

I can get the M50 for AUD130

I know electronics cost a bit more down under, but that's a lot for just some M50s. If you can't find a better deal on another set then go for it I guess.

The only others I'd look into are the Shure SRH440 or Sony V6 - but for mimimal price difference between them I'd rather get the better looking ATH-M50

Anyway, thanks for errything dudes
