RAMBUS's RDRAM was one of many innovations in the past. It was an elegant design and much faster than the industry standard (PC133 SDRAM) at the time, but the company that invented it asked for too much in licensing fees from mainboard manufacturers. The result was that (even though it was superior) it never was adopted in a big way. Later, when DDR-SDRAM memory was introduced, RAMBUS sued claiming infringement on their patents. They lost that one, and as such,....they were labeled as Patent Trolls.

The reason Intel was pushing RAMBUS so hard is because it uses narrow buses due its insanely high clock speed. That saves big manufacturing costs on the chipset.

It's also the reason RAMBUS was chosen for N64 and PS2. High bandwidth for low mobo costs.

Shame about the stupidly high latency.

Electromagnetic waves kinda behave like water, if water can get into somewhere, then EM can too. For something to truly be EM shielded, it needs to be completely sealed off from whatever generates the interference, so all these isolated mobo traces and "shields" full of gaps and holes are placebo. Even with an external DAC, you want the power delivery to also be isolated from the actual unit, or be driven by batteries.
