Portfolio Building

0 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: ]
I've been trying for years to get a job drawing comics without success. However, now that I might actually possess the skill to land a job in the comics field, I'm starting to realize it's sort of a dead end financially, unless you get in with Marvel/DC which is nearly impossible. Some friends suggested I go the game art route. I'm going to SDCC this year and lots of gaming companies - video and traditional - hold portfolio reviews there, in fact last year there were more reviews by those companies than anyone looking to make comics. I've never considered applying at a gaming company before so what do I need to make a good portfolio for them? Let's talk about successful portfolio building .

I'm basically addicted to doing gestures. They're all I do. I can't bring myself to do anything else. Is it comfort? Is it fear? Is this what Vilppu means by feeling it? How do I get out of this trance-like state and start pushing myself again? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6HIucV5M_U

Why A Career In Comics Makes No Sense

Heres a breakdown from Brian Churilla: >Pic related is one year's output >264 pages plus four covers for non-Big Two, non-creator owned work >Page rate was $125 >Gross pay was $33,625 >Net pay was $24,210, or $2,017.50 a month >Have to work 50-60 hours a week with no vacations to get by >This is reality for 95% of artists working in comics >His schedule only allows for four hours of sleep a night His advice is to find another career (either in or out of art) to live off of and do comics on the side, because unless you get a Big Two gig (aka win the lottery) you're fucked. Pretty insightful. http://brianchurilla.tumblr.com/post/121294649150/so-you-want-to-be-a-comic-book-artist-heres

Why does the internet culture tend to be aesthetically pretty childish looking?

It's to the point where if I see something immature looking on the internet I will accept it, but if I saw that same thing outside of the internet I'd think it's for kids. Obviously there are exceptions, but on the whole things tend to look kiddish. I think it's interesting.

So I am self taught to date, and want to get more serious about my studies, so I want to get some 'textbooks' for my studies. What do you guys think about this selection of books for each 'fundamental'? Are some better than others? Should any be omitted? Any added? Perspective: -Perspective Made Easy, Norling -'The complete guide to Perspective', John Raynes -Scott Robertson's 'How to Draw' Value and Tone: -Creative Illustration, Loomis (1 chapter) -Scott Robertson's 'How to Render' -'Color and Light', James Gurney Composition: -'Composition', Arthur Wesley Dow -'Creative Illustration, Loomis (1 Chapter) -'Picture This', Molly Bang Anatomy: -'Figure Drawing/Drawing Head and Hands', Loomis -'Anatomy for Sculptors', Uldis Zarins -'Constructive Anatomy/Guide to Drawing from Life', Bridgman -'Die Gestalt', Bammes -Vilppu's Videos Color Theory: -'Color and Light', Gurney -'Alla Prima 2', Richard Schmid -The New Munsell Student Color Set Misc: -Bargue Drawing Course Also, what do you think the advantages/disadvantages to having physical copies of books are? Are there any that are better to have physical copies of than others? Help me figure this out guys, and I'll scan 'How to Render' for you all to enjoy.

Outdated Software

Does anyone here purposefully use outdated versions of Photoshop or other art programs? I have the latest Photoshop CC, and I find it to be extremely clunky, crash-prone, and slow. I'm curious if older versions worked any better, or if Photoshop has always been flawed. Apparently Arne (http://androidarts.com/) still uses Photoshop 5.5 (released in 1999!) for some of his work.

Posting some NSFW work I've been doing in my free time -- experimenting with digital coloring in Photoshop. Any thoughts and critique, or tips and shortcuts, would be much appreciated. If you're into the pin-ups I post, I can also include the handdrawn comics that accompany them. Thanks in advance! First up: Wonder Woman

Old thread: >>2117368 Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises. Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up. Before asking "what should I read/view/study/learn," consult this link: http://irishopp.hubpages.com/hub/how-to-draw-learn If your question is related to Loomis perhaps you should consult this link as well. This thread's exercise will be a study. Study this image as a gesture study, a composition study, a value study, or any other kind of study. This should be really simple compared to the previous exercises. Threadly reminder to avoid carpal tunnel: http://www.healthline.com/health/carpal-tunnel-wrist-exercises

Hey If I'm beginning in art, but don't know how the hell to develop my own style, can I ask here? The style I want and love to see is the one shown in the photo (from RubberNinja) Is there such a thing as copying a style and stuff? How would I go around drawing like that?
