Has anyone tried following this? http://drawabox.com/ How did you go? I'm still doing the basics at the moment, it's good to have tasks to do but I'm not sure if they're effective.

So a couple weeks ago I posted my first piece of work in over 4 years. The two largest criticisms I got were that my piece was too flat and that my lines were "chicken scratch". One dude said good job but it was probably just sympathy. In final yall told me to read the sticky so I did. Anyway, I have been practicing a lot, reading a lot and watching others paint on youtube. I am looking for honest feedback from people better than me. Tell me what I am sucking at. Tell me how I am failing so I can fix it.

Why did he paint his neck in such a weird way? Also why is he considered a genius? Yeah, he was a good painter for his time but why is he considered one of the greats? Michelangelo and Leonardo I get. I just can't see it with Raphael

Guys I'm starting to be desperate, I need a program like paint (circles, lines, colors, modulation of size by selection, etc.) BUT with smooth capability, I use fire alpaca, but is too hard do shapes, I used opencanvas and customize position, size or angles is a pain in the butt, I even try with smooth paint but the program doesn't have lines or circles... Just need a smooth Microsoft paint or something like that

can we discuss art itself? what is art for? what is it's purpose right now in 2015? Has art really reached that point of no-return, where every work of art falls inexorably through the filter of "is this art?" and if so, is literally "everything" a form of artistic expression, or every form of artistic expression really depends on a text, a king of well-built argument that somehow sustains it?

I'm currently building a vis dev portfolio for the animation industry and going to hoof it from the east coast to Burbank for this convention. I have a vague idea of what an employer would want to see (characters/environments/props) but I'm not sure how to organize all that information into a winning portfolio. Any tips/ advice? Is four months enough time to put together a "good" portfolio? >>2159784 is an example of my current ability. I know a single figure doesn't show much but I'm starting to get a grasp on drawing. Also, anyone have experience going to one of these things? What's the floor like? Is it easy to get portfolio reviews? Does Andreas Deja have a firm handshake?

/ic/ Useful Tips/Ref/Resource sharing thread #1

Hey guys, been planning to make this sort of thread for a while to hopefully get these things rolling along like those question threads. All in the title, share things you've come across that you find helpful and want to pass along to other anons. Find a solid fix to a problem, or a cool shortcut you caught in some little-known youtube video? Post it up! Good exercise idea? Go for it. Reference or even master drawing that one could study for composition, color, value, even if it's just really pleasant on the eyes - let's see it. Try citing sources too if you can just to help out. Post links and personal drawing notes too, or whatever suggestion you think might help. Try to keep tips to things that can actually be applied immediately, rather than just generalized information. Note that I didn't mention tutorials. I find that "how-to" infographics flood these things and don't tend to have much use outside of their specific topic or picture. Dropping the trip after this post, just putting it up for easy searches in the future. Also, let's just try to keep these civilized.
