Hello /ic/, /fa/g here.
I am practicing fashion illustration and really like a style of shading done like in pic related, and want more pictures for reference.
The thing is, I don't know anything about art, is there a certain name for this type of art? It seems to be associated with old crime / detective films and tv / film noir, but I can't find anything when I google "film noir art" or anything.
Tldr what is this blocky, black / white type of non-gradient shading called?
Painting a day

why can't you do this, /ic/?
JS: How did "painting a day" get started? When did it start?
DK: I have always made small, mostly premier-coup paintings of places I know and things I see. The "painting a day" concept developed when I started thinking about ways to present and sell some of my work outside of the gallery system.
In the early 2000s, after years of showing my work in galleries, I decided to have a one-night show in my studio. I installed makeshift track lighting and hung one hundred of what I began calling my postcard paintings (postcard-sized oil sketches) priced at $100 each. It was a great night. We had lots of wine and a small band and it was really more of a party, but it turned out to be tremendously successful. Most of the paintings sold, my email list grew and most important, I got to know the people who bought my work.

Did some stuff for the Welcome to Night Vale t-shirt contest and I'm stuck between two mockups. And on one of those mockups I'm stuck between two poses. Suggestions and critique appreciated, a t-shirt designer I am not so I'm probably not going to win but it was good Sai practice. Also, between the two, the second one seems more t-shirt-y but I prefer the first.
Last link was my first idea for shits and giggles. Also, the content won't make sense out of context so if any of you care the episode I took inspiration from is transcripted here: http://aimlessglee.tumblr.com/post/55183086965/welcome-to-night-vale-episode-thirteen-transcript It's "A Story About You".
Thanks in advance, /ic/.
