How to improve linework

I'm not talking about drawing perfect circles and 100% straight lines and i'm also not talking about knowledge (how to draw a portrait, dog,..) but how to increase the quality of loose line sketching? How did old masters like Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, Charles Dana Gibson, Delacroix, Da Vinci,.. improve their line work? Obviously there is tons of practice, but is there any particular practice to make more confident lines? Should i think more while putting down every single line? Does excercises like this help? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjIqb4soKHg I know a lot of designers and concept artists practice that kind of things but i'm not sure if painters and illustrators do the same since then usually don't tend to make a "perfect" circle or totaly straight line Pic. related: one of Da Vinci's drawings. It looks like some quick scrible but every line is exactly where it is supposed to be. Should i copy old master drawings?

Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread "Gesture is the single most important element in the drawing." - Glenn Vilppu Previous Thread: >>1627707 Try to keep calm, have a positive attitude and avoid making Kind Janitor-san angry! A general message to aspiring artists: Don't ever think that you should stop attempting to learn how to draw because "it takes too long" or "drawing is just a hobby." Being shitty at your hobby is definitely not better than doing your hobby well, no matter what your laziness tells you. Have some dedication in what you love to do, damn it! Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun. This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil. >Fresh off the boat? Concentrating problem when drawing from life

12 more posts in this thread. [Missing image file: sketching.jpg]
Sup guys! I'll try to be short :) Whenever i draw from life, it seems i can't concentrate on a subject i am drawing. I always try to rush and sketch as quick as i can without thinking what am i doing. So that's why i get very bad results (pic related). I draw for more than 4 years (almost daily) and i haven't spend more than 15 minutes for anything i've draw from live (potrait, selfportrait, anymal or objects) in last 3 years (one year after i started to draw gestures). Dog sketches took me about 2-4 min each and potraits took me around 10 min. It's not that i don't want to spend more time for sketching/drawing but i simply can't concentrate. I can't observe well. I try to get it down as quick as i can without spending more than 10 seconds for observing. When i study from books and then draw from imagination, applying that knowledge from books, i can concentrate more because i find it more interesting. But when i draw something for fun, i just mindlessly scribble to make it done as quick as i can and i don't gain anything from it (obviously) except how to make qiuck gesture looks like shit. Do any of you have same problems? Is there any book you would recommend to read to learn have to make longer drawing from life? I'm reading Bridgman's and Loomis' book and i've watch Vilppu's videos. That problem with concentrating came as soon as i started to learn how to draw gestures and quick sketches. Before that, i could spend 30 min or 2 hours for one drawing.

I know theres been a fuckton of college threads recently but does anyone have experience with the Massachusetts College of Art and Design? There seems to be a consensus that art schools are shit and going to a atelier/community college or self teaching are the best ways to learn but because this is a fully accredited art school that costs the same as attending the only decent atelier (The Academy of Realist Art) nearby i dont know where it stands. Its state funded so its probably not a for-profit scam, tuition is 10k a year, the student work ive seen looks solid and college books/websites rank it fairly high. But the problem is that i cant find that much student work outside of the official website and ive never seen a mention of the school on any online art community. I dont know if its just a small school, if its graduates are just terrible and not finding work or if its completely focused on conceptual shit that doesnt land anyone mainstream success. So yeah has anyone on /ic/ gone to Massart or know anyone who has? Does it have quality instructors with possible business connections? Is the illustration/painting program good? If you dont know anything about it does this post make it sound like its worth attending for a semester to find out? This is pretty much my only option money-wise other than self teaching while working to support myself or The Academy of Realist art which im pretty sure just teaches the barque course and i feel like i could probably just buy the lithographs and study that on my own.

Need some opinions Working on a new series where I'm drawing all the standard classes such as rouge, warrior, and mage etc.. in my own style, this is my sketch so far. Now I still have a rough time with proportions and I want them to be correct while still letting go of some of the rules of them to make my cartoon characters more well, cartoony. I like this sketch so far but something about the left side of the body seems off and I can't figure out what. The left hand is supposed to be a little closer to the viewer as he is going to be hold some sort of weapon. Help please?

How does one into rendering? I'm not shelling out for the CtrlPaint series, any other good resources on textures, color, and lighting? Like pic related but more generalized, principles one can apply to every drawing like guidlines and construction.

Time to Get Gud. Today's exercise is a collaborative Paintover is focused color, composition and imagination. Don't use photo textures, references are fine though as long as you don't copy them 1:1.

Hi, /ic/. This would be the first time I've posted here, but I'm going through some old works I make. Most are incomplete and this one is sort of emblematic of my inability to complete a work. I know many of the flaws, feel free to point them out. I was experimenting with color and line in an attempt to abstract a scene as much as possible, while, if it had been completed, maintaining a coherent image. This was started and finished some time in early december of 2009. Senior year of high school. As public schools go, it's quite academically focused and known for such. I jumped from scrub-tier art 1 class to an AP design class based on similar designs and, ad the time, a fairly clear grasp of design pricniples that would have put me above the art 2 or art 3 classes that were also offered. Problem is I burned out, this was my final project and I never finished it. I want analysis and critique, if you're willing to give it. I have a few more, different, if similar pieces I'll probably share. I'm much older now and I don't creat much anymore. I'm trying to justify going back into it, and I could use the brutal honesty of 4chan in critiquing this and a few other things. I don't think I lack talent or ability, but I certainly lack motivation and discipline. So if you guys would kindly indulge me, what do you think, could this have been a good piece, if completed? Forgive the resolution, it's quite old. A lot of the uneven coloring wasn't visible on the original picture, and I think it's an artifact of being scanned rather than using a good camera, that's beside the point though. The orignal is detroyed and lost, this is what I have.
