Anime/Manga/Cartooning Thread

"To any man who has slaved to acquire skill in his art, it is most irritating to have his ability referred to as a gift. Perhaps there is one genius in a hundred years or more who can achieve perfection by divine inspiration. I have never met such a man, and I do not know any successful artist who did not get there by the sweat of his brow."

Previous Thread: >>1991023

A general message to aspiring artists: "Lack of knowledge can be greater torture than the effort of acquiring it. When all is said and done, nature is your best instructor."

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun.

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

one wee lil tiny mistake i always see in a lot of things like this is his left elbow (our right) is a bit... the lil line you drew there to signal the fold of skin when the elbow bends, it wouldn't really be there in the position the arm is in unless the arm maybe has a significant amount of fat (he seems a rather lithe character)

basically a good rule of thumb is unless the arm is bent past a 90 degree angle at the elbow, the muscle contour will carry a more or less straight line from the top of the... muscle (BRACHIORADIALIS (jus googled it)) that's there, but that is also dependent on what side the hand is facin an the angle of the rest of the arm to the viewer as well... like i said, it's kinna tricky but once you get it it's super simple try usin your own arm for reference (unless it's a lil too chubby, but that's okay, there's reference photos online nwn)

Anonymous 2015-02-24 23:29:45 No.1994577

Direction of where the eye looks at is extremely influenced extremely by how the panels are created and the contents inside regardless of the direction we read it in. I should not have to rely on culture to know that, but with the page I can't tell at all. The panels themselves have camera angles that don't seem to be a proper sequence. The black and white inking seems difficult to comprehend. The character does not seem very consistent.

The page needs more panels that glue everything together logically. There's a spaceship which suddenly moves onto a panel about what I assume to be a pilot. Is this pilot looking at the ship in the first panel? I should not have to ask that question.

To show a connection, one could make a new panel to zoom in onto the ship and show the pilot in the same camera angle. Next panel, the pilot is checking controls and then something pipes up in front of him. Next panel he looks down to check what is there. Next panel the camera angle finally changes and we can then show the original second panel.

That is a logical flow and sequence that would tell a story instead of placing pictures onto panels in a page and expecting the reader to piece together what happens. Storytelling plays an extremely large role in comics. It might sound difficult and more drawing to do, but that's what creating an effective comic is.

I think the minuscule line is fine where it's at. In fact I don't think it was put there out anatomy sakes, rather for design. It flows better with it. It's tiny and unnoticeable, but it has an effect. Cover it up and the arm seems to flatten a bit.

This next part iss not directed at the OP, but to the two anatomy artists:

This pedantic scrutiny over delinateing muscle flab and worrying over minute joint bends is for suckers who can't distinguish between art and diagram. Seriously, you autist think every lines stands in for something? Guess you also think stylization is just exaggeration, right?

Get over yourselves.

big problem with this imo is the amount of color & value contrast the glove at the bottom creates, dragging the eye away from the face. i would swap the exact color of the goggles with the exact color of the glove, and then make the new goggles a bit redder in hue, and the new gloves a bit more tealish in hue just to reduce color temp contrast at the bottom and increase it at the top.

you really want your forms to instantly read, like, you want the viewer to see the work an instantly realize what all the forms an things are (unless part of the work is meant to obscure for later revealment, but you prolly wouldn't really want to go for that with a simple character illustration)

other than that tho, A+++ ver good nwn

I love your shapes and coloring style. The only thing I can suggest is for you to adjust your shadow colors a bit more. On the blue, the shadow gets warmer, but everywhere else it stays the same and only gets darker in value. It sort of flattens your cool shapes, so I think making the rest your shadows warmer would really make your colors stand out.

interestin an consistent stylistically

things of note are that her left (our right) foot is... well, it looks like it should be her right foot. the background lives a bit to be desired. if you're goin for sexy, i'd suggest workin on the male genitalia a bit more, other wise, this is p neat an unique an i don't really wanna set you off course from what you got goin

I see it for the 5th time, he was in beginner, porn, draw and even question thread, always asking "How do I make her body look more attractive?". And he even gets 2-3 replies.

>>1994332
Dude, there is no shortcut, there is no single critique/post that will make you a god tier artist. You must to learn the hard way, grind through fundies and anatomy. There is no other way. And I wont even bother pointing out what is wrong with her body, becouse people already did it in other threads you posted this.

Or is it new merc_wip and I'm getting trolled?

The hair shouldn't go up anymore. It makes her head look like it is point up toward the back. You should not see that much of the hairline

I really like that stereotypical 90's anime aesthetic. I think it does a better job than just about any other style in minimizing the features for animation while still leaving them convincing, I wish there was some guide on how to draw like that. I want to internalize those symbols and incorporate them into my own work. I'm not even a weeaboo piece of garbage either nigga the shit just looks good real talk.

easiest way to do that properly is learn your anatomy an shit an then go find artbooks from animes you feel really exemplify the style you wanna go for an then study their designs an see what they do stylistically by cross referencin it with your anatomy knowledge an seein how/why they make their stylistic choices

Typical animoo drawer here, working on a random original character.

I get a lot of inspiration from Josei manga artists, hence the big hands and delicate features.

Ditto, Once I can work up the nerve to start drawing again, I want to try and emulate a lot of styles of the 80's & 90's. Shit, even some stuff from the 70's on down looks real nice.

I was trying to keep the one of separation thing, I guess I could arrange the eye lid values to make them cohesive and/or make her eyelashes shorter

The character also has a tad bigger and curvier than average forehead.

I will try to fix the lips and arm. Thanks for the feedback

it's ok to have a curvy forehead, but look at this character design hair/skull ratio- it's normal, while you made her have some kind of extended hair bulb above. your view point is from above her, but you made her look up, so there is no was for the viewer to see that much of the hair area on top- it's for the perspective if she was looking down
