I'm curious how /ic/ artists (in the USA) deal with health insurance.

Guessing that most users are young enough to be covered through your parents or in college (which usually offers a group plan, if I remember right). But I know there's older working artists out there.

Do you maintain a job outside the field for the benefits?
Do you have an arts-related job that has benefits? (Teaching, museum work, etc)
Do you pay for individual coverage?
Skip it all together?

I am under 30, trying to make it as a painter, paying $190 a month for private insurance, odd jobs and waiting tables to pay the rent that's not covered by too-infrequent sales. I'm irritated to find that I'm in a state which doesn't expand medicaid, yet my income's too low to qualify for subsidies, even though my individual premiums will likely increase or even double.

Feels woeful, fuck is it freaky. Just generally facing financial security as an artist is freaky. House, kids, 401k, health care, these things seems so out of reach.

>So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’

Lol, but I meant as a serious question and it seems relevant to this boards as living as a working artist.

And I'm happy for the Sweden & Aus artists, but that does little to answer.

Health insurance isn't really necessary so long as you're young and... healthy

Until you get into a car accident or fall down the stairs, then you are going to wish you had some.

Dude man I haven't even though about these things yet. You really opened my eyes though. My goal is to become a industrial designer, designing the UI and interface of the interior of cars. I hope to get hired by a car manufacturer so they will have benefits. But honestly the life span of the job doesn't last very long so I may not have long lasting insurance benefits or 401k.

I'm 22 however still in college covered under my mother's insurance but when I turn 24 I believe I am required to have my own health/dental/car insurance.

I'm not going to graduate until I'm 26 so I am balls worried that my 11/hr job is not going to cover my rent + insurance. I'm paying 306 every 3 months for my car insurance. My yearly gross salary is only 14k so I do not think I qualify for obamacare either.

My current tuition for commu college is ~1400 per semester and I do not have any financial aid.

I think I just need to keep grinding at my restaurant job until I become a waiter(i'm currently cold expo) and make around 400 a week.

Life is so scary, and its not what's coming at you its what we have to pay so when it does come at you its not as bad. I feel you so hard man

real life sucks

Maybe for your health care, but you're fucked on many other fronts, and who knows what will happen to your health care as your nation and culture continues to blindly spiral to its demise.

I pray and grieve for you Swedes, even more so due to the fact that your government and media systematically hide from you the ugly truth, and alter your constitution without your say, robbing you of your rights, while academia so effectively indoctrinates you with suicidal beliefs. While many Western nations/cultures are heading towards their downfall, Sweden's singular lust for their own destruction is breathtaking.

To answer your question, OP, I pay for individual coverage. It's my goal to eventually receive coverage from an arts-related job, but I'm not there yet as I'm part-time and thus exempt from coverage.

Health insurance is...insurance. Accidents happen, health issues arise unexpectedly. Young people are not invincible.

is that just some kind of weird capitalist rant or do you actually have a specific issue with sweden?

>is that just some kind of weird capitalist rant or do you actually have a specific issue with sweden?

It's not a capitalist rant, nor particularly weird. Sweden is a nation in decline, and the government, media, and academia are complicit in this state of affairs. The native people are routinely kept in the dark about the true state of things.

Though this has serious implications for ART in Sweden, this complex subject isn't particularly well-suited for /ic/.

Anonymous 2013-10-05 12:44:18 No.1560088
I'm really considering it. Where do I move, /ic/?
But it IS necessary for health insurance to work. If only the old and sick get insurance, the premiums will be outrageous. Look at it this way; you get insurance when you're young so it's not retardedly expensive when you're old.

This chart is not adjusted for inequality, isn't it? I doubt countries like Italy would be that high otherwise.
As an Italian, I'm surprised and suspicious about my country even going up at all. This chart smells fishy.
