Lots of pro artists always say they learned from copying other artist, so why do we only have photo study threads? Why not have an artist study thread? And should it only be masters, or can it be top comic artist/concept artist too? Traditional thread, post a piece you think that would be beneficial for study. Looking for good works that show anatomy, perspective, and good use of light/shadow, and composition, and feel free to join in on discussion. Would love to get a good thread going on this subject.

I guess it's because we could take their mistakes so it isn't always a good idea.

I take apart aspects of pieces and merge them.
Like the gesture of Yusuf, and the tones of used colors, so I can translate them to another color.

Study the masters too. At their level deviations from life are done intentionally and done well - you'll pick up some aesthetically pleasing simplifications and exaggerations, even if you don't understand them now.

You generally want to avoid copying someone who isn't a master because chances are they're making mistakes, and you would be too inexperienced to even recognize those mistakes. You thus risk learning the wrong things and reinforcing them.

Copying from the masters is pretty fun too. I loved drawing the forms from Michelangelo and Peter Paul Reubens.

Bouguereau grills are kawaii and moe.

Slightly off-topic, but I have this weird method of study that I like to throw in sometimes. I'm wondering if anyone else does this or it's a complete waste of my time or what. Sometimes I'll see a work I like on /ic/ (by someone here, not a professional or old master), and then I'll try to recreate it perfectly. As I'm recreating it, I make an effort not to redline and just to remake what I see 100% accurately. When I'm done, I assess everything I think is "wrong" with the original drawing, and then I assess everything I copied incorrectly in my version, and then try to make a final version where I correct both of our mistakes. I feel like it helps me to become a better critic, a better artist, and helps me draw what I see and not what I think I see.

Not something I do like on a daily basis but I like to throw one in every now and then. Thoughts?

That's dumb, just find a photo and hide it, try to recreate from memory, and compare to see mistakes. Or just do direct photostudies. Theres no point in learning how to correct other peoples mistakes, put that effort into learning how to correct your own.

pretty interesting, any examples?

i haven't done that myself, once or twice i've taken an image from here which i was going to red-line but which i end up using as a base for my own picture. not a study thing though, just for fun.

that pose is fucking impossible and nonsensical. Why would she want to touch the sharp blade while whizzing through the air, twisting like a dying snail? That's fucking dangerous as it is, but the way she bends her hand around the blade would slit her wrist even without the other stuff happening.
The pussy can't be seen from that angle too, and if she's making such a exhausting move, why is her face so calm?

I like the shoes and the dynamic pose, but fucking hell it makes no sense.

God damn it, OP, why did you have to use an image like that to start the thread? This thread is now doomed to be a wannabe artist circle jerk where they keep posting the same retarded "critiques" over and over again without ever stopping or reading that others already wrote exactly what they did. 300 posts in, some idiot will still reply to OP with "that anatomy is impossible and broken! Such nonsensical anatomy, I cannot believe how this artist couldn't see how broken her spine is oh my lawd what a terrible drawing amiritie guys?"

And yes, the drawing is wrong, I'M NOT DEFENDING IT. I'm saying, after the 10th person pointed it out, people get the idea and you can stop.

The drawing looks cooler than anything YOU can do aswell. All I'm saying is if a drawing has flaws, /ic/ autists will not stop writing their dumb little "critiques". It's just basic /ic/ 101 to deal with the autists. Never start a thread with an image of a character drawing if you want it to be on topic and not derail into the typical amateur circle jerk where everyone tries to show how much they know about anatomy.
