Who is the most vital artist today? Most important? Relevant? Is it possible or even likely that they're a cartoonist/comic artist? CF's book doesn't even have scans.

hirst, sadly. i'm willing to bet the average person will think of hirst when asked to name a very successful and influential contemporary artist.

ai weiwei because his stuff is beautiful and fairly easy to understand in terms of message. plus he lives under an oppressive government and has been beaten up and imprisoned for his art so you can't say he's a poser or anything.. and he looks cool.

yeah, but if you went into a room of 20 from all different ages and cultural background, i bet the majority of the people have never heard of Ai Weiwei or Hirst.

really?

a chinese sculpture.

with a useless mass produced item

all interlocking into a sort of wall or net.

and you can't think what that'd be about?

i'm surprised you can ride a bike, someone must of had to carefully explain to you how the pedals make the wheels go quite a few times before you got it.

>wheel
>useless
You must be neanderthal.
Anyway, in my opinion art should not have any meanings at all, and all that conceptual crap is pretentious by definition. All I see is waste of resources. If that is the point then it's kind of like fighting fire with fire.

Banksy, Hirst and Ai Weiwei are all super popular though.

What about most potential? Best newcomers?
