As usual this thread is for the discussion and pics of tracked and wheeled AFVs of all kinds from MBTs to supertanks to self propelled AA guns. Please keep it civil and cite sources for statistics.
Its initial proposal dating from 1918, the development history of the Char is long and distinguished, and took more than a few cues from the “landships” that had characterised mechanised conflict in WWI. Preparatory work began in 1921, but a working prototype was not to be found until 1932, following a flurry of last minute tweaks improving mobility and armour. The B1 then came into service in 1935, weighing 31 tonnes, carrying four crew, a turreted 37 mm and a stubby hull mounted 75 mm howitzer. With very thick armour (14-60 mm), the six cylinder engine which powered it offered only 270hp and thus a sluggish top speed of 17.5 mph. A revised model, the Char B1bis weighing an extra tonne and with both an upgraded 47 mm gun and a new powerpack giving 300hp, vastly improved cross country performance. A little known third version of the Char B also existed, known as the Char B1ter, with extra hull gun traverse and a 350hp engine. However, only five would be completed. Nevertheless, 300-320 Char Bs of all descriptions would be in service with the French Army by 1941. The Char B would distinguish itself as a superlative tank in 1940; nigh on impenetrable from the front by any Wehrmacht tank - or AT gun for that matter - on that front, with only large bore AA guns showing effectiveness against the Char B. At the battle of Arras in 1940, a lone Char B1 allegedly ambushed a column of PzKpfW III/IVs destroying thirteen in the process for no damage. A shame then, that French capitulation doomed these formidable tanks to irrelevance.
