Social capital.

I thought about joining the military actually because I wanted to be able to recount stories from the perspective of a soldier in fiction I write but I was told not to do that for reasons that should be obvious.

Some people want to appear to be tough or appear to almost have been ranger battalion or something of that nature.
I know for me my background check didn't clear and by the time I could expunge my criminal past it was too late. But, in reality even if I could go in at my age I wouldn't...don't have that kind of drive or edge anymore and quite frankly Uncle Sam can lick my asshole.

I would have joined but was rejected due to shin splints, was told to come back a year later, was aiming at rifleman or combat envy.

Decided to finish my degree and really work on my fitness. Decided officer instead of enlisted.

Massively improved my fitness over 2 years (was a couch Potatoe so not difficult). Got my head together. Broke my arm a week before I had an appointment to begin the enlistment process.

Advised by doctors to wait 1 year after arm fixation for the bones to remodel before I reapply.

Does that annoy you? Cause it annoys the ever loving shit out of me.

I was considering it a few years ago, then I had a spontaneous pneumothorax, spent three days barely able to breathe because nobody believed anything was wrong and I didn't have a car at the time, then spent a week in the hospital after I finally got someone to take me there. I decided rather than risk having that happen again in the middle of a warzone, I would go to college. Just about to finish up my Bachelor's in mechanical engineering technology. I was hoping to get some kind of firearms design type job but living in New York that probabaly won't happen, but I figure I can at least get a good paying job

When I was 18 (26now) I was in the recruitment office with a marine sgt getting ready to sign papers and my dad found me and came in and nearly killed the sgt. He went to the pokey for a few days and I am so grateful he did that for me. I didnt understand at the time but looking back now and looking at my friends that went ahead and joined, im glad I never had to go to Afghanistan. Dont get me wrong though, I am truly ashamed I didnt get to do my part for my country but im better off not having gone through with it.

Turns out I'm lazy as shit. Also, by the time I turned 18, G-Dubs had declared victory. How the fuck was I supposed to know we'd still be there 13 years later?

Have people always said this about joining up, or is it somewhat unique to our generation from growing up during the patriotic rush in the post-9/11 era?

My "Would have joined but..." story is a little funny so I sometimes retell it.

I was trying to get into college but I wasn't the best student so I wasn't succeeding. So I was considering other options when I mentioned the military to my parents.

They had an intervention, whole extended family was there telling me I was being an idiot and military service was for poors and failures (note that some of them were veterans themselves).

I eventually got into college and then 9/11 happened so dodged a bullet there.

You mean the guys who work for Israel?

Why would we fight a "terrorist" organization created by our Greatest of Allies?

>Norks
The South Korean military is much bigger than ours is. They could easily handle the Norks. At most we'd send a CVBG.
>ISIS
You're acting as if Middle Eastern tensions aren't normal. ISIS isn't new at all. Hell ISIS could become an actual country once this shit blows over if they succeed enough.

I reapplied and intend on doing the reserve thing, though.

That's the problem, extreme ends of both argument annoy me.
If you served, cool be proud of it.
If you didn't serve, cool too.
People can make their own life choices, as long as they don't go full vegan-tier and tell everyone about how great their choices are and why everyone should be like them.

I wanted to join the military but they wouldn't let me join due me not being a preppy faggot that they want. They don't want people who are not phased by killing enemy combatants and won't get ptsd like the pussy faggots they want.

The military these days is for show and not for getting things done. A real soldier is cold, ruthless and gets the job done not some faggot who talks about how he misses his wife and wishes he had a beer.

I had a buddy on active who had that. Burned up all his leave in basic because his family was convinced his mom was going to die several times (red cross messages every time). He was 5 days in the hole when his mom died. Our command did their best to get him home, even helped pay for flights and all. Family held the funeral 2 weeks later on a weekend after the command signed off on a 4-day pass.

The SGM was adamant about making an example out of him on proper use of leave and was somehow involved in blocking every leave and pass paperwork sent up. I imagine theres been situations where some crusty sausage major won the battle just to prove a wasted point.

Family first man. Plus the bennies with PD and NG, noice.
